Kickoff

On January 5th, this past Saturday, members of Team 1257 gathered in the Magnet High School auditorium for the 2019 season game reveal. The game, FIRST® Destination: Deep Space, is space-themed and revolves around the placement of kickballs called "cargo" and discs called "hatch panels" on structures representing rockets and cargo ships. The game animation can be found here, and the manual can be found here. After the game reveal, we spent time reading the game manual and rules to determine our build strategy and more in a following strategy session.

Cargo and Hatch Panels

The main point-scoring field elements of Deep Space are orange kickballs called "cargo" and plastic discs called "hatch panels" that can attach to hook-and-loop tape (Velcro). To score points, first hatch panels must be attached to "bays" that hold cargo. Then, cargo is placed in the bays (without hatch panels, the cargo falls out). The game pieces can be seen above in detail. A picture of them being scored is below.

Sandstorm and Climb

The first fifteen seconds of the match are typically an autonomous period. This year, it has been replaced by a "Sandstorm" period. During Sandstorm, the drive team cannot see the field. However, the robots can be driven with assistance of robot-mounted cameras. Alternatively, the robots can operate autonomously as they have in the past.

The endgame of the match focuses on a robot climb. Three tiers of climbing platforms are located on each alliance's platform, with each higher tier giving more points for a climb (see image above).

Family Sponsorships

This year, we are continuing last year's initiative providing a free T-shirt to each student. Although it costs the team more, we believe it is important to ensure that everyone will be able to attend competition representing Team 1257. Family donations make these purchases that help members of the team, such as these free T-shirts, possible. Families who donate a certain amount will be displayed on the back of next year's team shirts to show our appreciation for their contribution. If you would like to donate to help us with this initiative, please contact the team at business1257@ucvts.org. For more information about sponsorship levels, view this link.

What's going on:

Subteams

  • All subteams: kickoff!
  • Build: started week by letting the freshman express their ideas on how to build each robot mechanism; then organized the designs and decided on a few that are testable. The past two days, the freshman have been split into groups to design and build prototypes of each mechanism, as well as the bot chassis and the field elements.

  • Business: worked on sponsorship letters, association contacts, and fundrasier protocols

  • Design: contacted merch vendors; sent out merch order form; worked with business on sponsor finalization for merch graphics

  • Electronics: updated firmware on new motor controllers; put terminals on new motor controllers and motors; restored connections on old batteries; tested piston for level 3 climb

  • Media: starting documentation

  • Outreach: sent newsletter

  • Programming: separated the programming team into smaller teams to work on each subsystem and went over project management to organize the build season; also started discussing possible programming features for this year and prototyping some code for vision

  • Safety: finishing up the final safety tests; beginning preparations for competition safety

  • Strategy: decided what objectives to scout; designed scouting app layout; training freshmen to create scouting apps in MIT App Inventor; administered rules test to team
