Pre-DCMP

Upcoming Competition (DCMP)

The Mid-Atlantic District Championship (DCMP) will take place at Stabler Arena at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA (Google Maps link). The event is next week from April 4th through 6th. To attend, permission slips and RSVP forms must be completed by Monday. Bus space is limited so we cannot provide a ride for all members; seating is given to those who submit permission slips, so make sure to hand those in (for members, instructions on necessary forms are in Slack). More info about DCMP can be found here.

Bridgewater-Raritan Results

Our second competition, Bridgewater, took place on March 16th and 17th. Our team made it to quarterfinals! Thank you to our alliance partners, Teams 223 and 6897. Results can be viewed here.

Drive Coach Interview

While we await the District Championship, we have an exclusive interview with our drive coach, Jason Salmanowitz, for our readers!:

Vanessa (interviewer): What do you like and dislike about Destination: Deep Space? What challenges have you faced as drive coach?
Jason: I like that in Deep Space there's a lot of potential for underdog teams to do well. Powerhouse teams can still win a match on their own, of course, but to do well in a match it is much more necessary to work with your alliance and ensure everyone does their part. I dislike the lack of fluidity this game has for match play since most games can be won with the same strategy, but nonetheless I always enjoy being on the field!

V: How has your job changed since last year's season?
J: One new challenge is having to balance the needs of our team and our alliance for the match. During qualifications, it's important to show off all the robot's capabilities, but it's also important to try and win the match to rank well for alliance selections. Last year, showing our capabilities aligned more often with winning matches because our robot could do fewer things. One challenge that's less new is working with other drive teams for discussion of match strategy. There's always a need to compromise between what teams want to do and what it would be best for them to do, and this year that is more important than ever.
On a more positive note, my job has gotten a lot easier as I've learned a lot about my drive team and they've learned a lot about gameplay. I trust them to do their job, and they trust me to do mine, and together we all always work towards having a good match.

V: How does drive team prepare for a match?
J: We do two things before a match. First, we plan what we're going to do by talking with our alliance partners and communicating with our strategy subteam to develop a plan for the match. Afterwards, we just relax, clear our heads, eat, and try to have a good time. The more relaxed we are, the better we perform.

V: What's your favorite food?
J: Favorite food is kugel or matzo ball soup, easily.

Family Sponsorships

This year, we are continuing last year's initiative providing a free T-shirt to each student. Although it costs the team more, we believe it is important to ensure that everyone will be able to attend competition representing Team 1257. Family donations make these purchases that help members of the team, such as these free T-shirts, possible. Families who donate a certain amount will be displayed on the back of next year's team shirts to show our appreciation for their contribution. If you would like to donate to help us with this initiative, please contact the team at business1257@ucvts.org. For more information about sponsorship levels, view this link.
