A Message from the Department Chair
We’re welcoming spring with a flurry of activity - I hope you are enjoying learning more about what is keeping students, staff and faculty so busy. Professor Mufit Akinc returns to Ankara, Turkey - returning to his roots where he began as an undergraduate, now as a prestigious Fulbright Senior lecturer.  Have a look at some renderings of the new Student Innovation Center - it’ll be messy for a while, but it’s going to be a great space. CALLING ALL ALUMS from 2012-2014 - we have a brief survey for you to aid us in for our self-assessment for ABET accreditation - we’d appreciate a few minutes of your time to help us out.  As always, we’d love to hear from all of you. Happy Spring!
- Dr. Kristen Constant

Frozen in a Flash: Rapid solidification keeps materials on cooling fast track

Cooling materials super-quickly, called rapid solidification, prevents the normal crystalline structures of materials from forming, often creating unique properties in the process. “If you take a molten metal and cool it, what wants to form will vary depending on its chemistry,” said Ames Laboratory scientist and Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering Director Matt Kramer, “because what wants to form is not always a homogeneous solid.” Read more here

There's a new student club in MSE: Metallurgica

A large interest in metals in the MSE department has sparked the creation of a new student organization called 'Metallurgica.' The student organization started this spring semester and kicked off with a group of five students competing in their first bladesmithing competition in San Diego. The group consists of 30 students and is led by MatE senior, Aishwarya Srinidhi. They plan to participate in metallography contests, participate in industry tours, and create a community of like-minded metal lovers. The group is advised by Dr. Pete Collins. Please reach out if you would like to share any industry knowledge in the metals area from which the group could benefit.
