EARTH DAY, ARBOR DAY, EVERY DAY

It's pedal to the metal for CG in April. There are Earth Day events, Arbor Day celebrations, and schools, residents and governments ready to celebrate trees, spring and our planet. We had a successful kickoff to our partnership with the City of Boynton Beach at their Earth Day event at Intracoastal Park.  We gave away 100 fruit and Florida native trees and residents received a healthy dose of educational conversation about species selection, tree benefits, maintenance and storm resilience. Thank you to Mayor Steven Grant and Sustainability Coordinator Rebecca Harvey for making trees a priority in your city and ensuring your residents reap their benefits. Go April! Go Boynton! More pictures.
YOU GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY (OR TREES)

Barwick Park: Where mulching is a pleasure. Community Greening partnered with Miami’s Region District #09 Publix for their annual Publix Serves Day! A group of 50 Publix employees from our local Delray Beach and Boynton stores gave some love to the 200 slash pine that we’ve planted in Barwick Park. They mulched, put on trunk protectors, removed invasive air potato, planted "George the Oak" to provide shade on the playground, pressure washed the playground equipment, gave away 20 Madame Blanc mangos and refurbished a bench…More Pictures
JM FAMILY REINVESTS IN DEERFIELD

One year ago, we had our largest one day event, planting 500 trees with 250 JM Family employees to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary.  Last week, a group of dedicated JM employees got out of the office and into the Florida sun to take care of 75 Florida native trees they planted in Villages of Hillsboro Park. JM wants to ensure that the park-goers of Deerfield experience the many benefits of these future shade throwers.  Live oaks, gumbo limbos, and wild tamarinds were mulched, pruned and received trunk protectors. Thank you to JM Family's Environmental Manager, Cristina Abboud Hicks, for engaging your colleagues and walking the walk!
CUB SCOUTS IN THE HOUSE!

Webelos Den Leader, Hollis Tidwell, and Cubmaster, Tony Jamen, brought out THE PACK to Knowles Park last Saturday.  The future is in good hands with this crew. And we were planting for the future too! Since it's on the intracoastal, we had to plant salt tolerant Florida native trees to be able to handle the rising seas. Cub Scout Pack 308 and their families had a great time digging holes, eating donuts, planting trees, drinking OJ, mulching, and eating pizza from Pizza Rustica. Thank you Sam Metott, Delray Beach's new director of Delray Beach Parks and Recreation for planning this family-fun-filled morning. Park visitors are going to enjoy the explosion of color from the Florida native silver buttonwoods along the coast for years to come.
MEET A TREE

‘It’s always rewarding to serve the community alongside my Publix Family. It was awesome to know that by planting a tree in the name of our founder, Mr. George, we were able to leave behind a living, growing tree that will provide shade to families while they enjoy the beautiful park for years to come. You could tell the associates had fun with the day. Many are from the community and some of them frequent the park themselves, so they were happy to see and be a part of the improvements. It was a long hot day and some of the work was strenuous but we stayed strong and dedicated and accomplished everything we set out to do!”

  DID YOU KNOW?

The Arbor Day Foundation is launching  The Time for Trees.  By 2022 - the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day - they plan to plant 100 million trees in forests and communities around the globe. Their goal is to inspire 5 million tree planters to help carry the mission forward.

Over their lifespan, 100 million trees are estimated to:

- Absorb 8 million tons of carbon, the equivalent of taking 6.2 million cars off the road for one year

- Filter 15,850 tons of microscopic airborne particulate matter out of the air — that would fill nine Olympic-sized swimming pools.

- Provide $32.9 Billion in total environmental benefits, the equivalent of the operating budget for the entire city of Chicago for about 10 years.

- Intercept and filter 7.1 billion cubic meters of water runoff, enough water to fill the water bottle of every person on Earth every day for five years.

- Remove 578,000 tons of chemical air pollution from our atmosphere, enough gaseous pollution to fill 70,000 Goodyear®blimps.
