Lots happening now at The Makery!
January/February 2017 Newsletter
There are lots of exciting things coming up at The Makery--new ventures and expanded offerings, more options for customized classes and parties, blogs and social media, name and time changes, workshops, workshops, workshops....oh, and did we mention chocolate?  Let's get right into it!
Of course, our new session of workshops is in full swing.  You can find the complete listing and register online at www.makerysvc.com, or by stopping by The Makery at 108 West Yankie, in historic downtown Silver City (open Thursday to Monday, 11 am to 4 pm).

We are offering a ton of new workshops this time around, in addition to some of the popular favorites from last year.  Some fun new offerings coming up soon include beaded kumihimo (which is a Japanese form of braiding that makes beautiful cording, straps, and jewelry), buttonhole stitch bookbinding, Secret Belgian bookbinding, and many more!

In addition, we are going to have a couple of three-session workshops, to be able to dig a little deeper into some seriously fun fiber arts skills:
  • Beginning Crochet starts this Saturday, 1/28 (tomorrow!), from 2 pm to 4 pm. (The second meeting will be Saturday, 2/4, and the third will be determined together by the group.)  We'll cover five basic stitches you need to start crocheting beautiful hats, bags, blankets, and so much more.  Later this year, we'll offer some more advanced crochet workshops, like freeform crochet and designing and making your own monsters, so consider this workshop to be a prerequisite for those.
  • Intro to Freestyle Weaving starts on Thursday, February 2, from 6 pm to 8 pm (and will meet for the following two Thursday evenings at the same time).  During this workshop, we'll explore at least 12 different freestyle weaving techniques!  These include inclusions, inlay, fluffy weaving, clasped weft, three-color interlock, looping, floats, knots, freestyle Brooks Bouquet, and more!  This will be a great opportunity to come and learn how to weave, if you're a brand new weaver, and to expand your repertoire of techniques so that you can truly weave your heart.  It functions as an introduction to freestyle--no rules, no mistakes, just joyful weaving from the heart, weaving as art--so it works for brand new and experienced weavers alike.  It's time to play!
Get more information and register at www.makerysvc.com.
We are also starting some fun new things!
  • Gelli Plate Play Dates for Grown-Ups -- On the first Saturday morning of each month (10 am to Noon), join us for creative play using Gelli plates to make beautiful and unique prints on paper, cardstock, and fabric. Super easy to learn, you will quickly be playing with color and textures and layering images.  These can be used in mixed media projects, to make greeting cards or in scrapbooking, or to embellish other items such as photo mats.  Gelli plates are playful, creative things--very little instruction is required and the "play-date" is all about having access to our vast array of tools and paints.  Plus, we do the clean-up!  The cost is $20.

  • Build-A-Workshop -- See something fun you want to try, but the timing doesn't work for you? If you can get a couple of your friends to join you, we can arrange a special workshop just for you! Talk to us about this anytime.

  • Parties at The Makery -- We are now doing all kinds of group parties at The Makery.  Have an idea for some crafty fun for your next party?  Talk to us! We also have a good list of possibilities that we'd be happy to discuss with you.  It's a great new option for parties--for young and old--in Silver City!
As always, contact us anytime by emailing wendi@makerysvc.com, calling 575-590-1263, or stopping by The Makery at 108 West Yankie in historic downtown Silver City.  We are open Thursday through Monday, from 11 am to 4 pm.  Or visit our website at www.makerysvc.com.
"Drop-In Weaving" is now Walk In and Weave--with new times!

Walk In and Weave is just that--you can walk in and weave during any of these pre-arranged times, and the hard part of weaving--warping, or setting up, the loom--will already be done for you.  Even if you've never woven before, you'll be weaving beautiful art from your heart with just about five minutes of instructions.  **No weaving experience necessary!**  Choose from any of our beautiful yarns from the "Wall of Yarn" and you'll be on your way.  We are always here to help, or to show you a new technique. Think of this as your "freestyle weaving class." We currently do this three times a week:
  • Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm
  • Mondays from 6 pm to 8 pm
  • Thursdays from 11 am to 1 pm
These sessions are available for all ages, from 4 to 104, and cost $20 ($15 for your first session) plus materials at $2/oz. It is not necessary to register ahead of time, just show up before the start time of your chosen session. (You can contact us to reserve a loom, if you wish.)

We are also offering a special weekly afterschool session just for kids, Thursdays from 4 pm to 5:30 pm, for $15 (which includes all materials).
Finally, a few brief mentions:
  • We are excited to participate in Chocolate Fantasia this year!  We are happy to support the work of the Mimbres Region Arts Council, and proceeds from this event benefit their arts education programs for children.  The theme is Wild West Days, so expect The Makery to transform into an Old West saloon on February 11, between Noon and 5 pm.  You can purchase tickets for Chocolate Fantasia at www.chocolatefantasia.org.  Tickets are $25 for 20 chocolate samples--and they will sell out!  (We are going to have the most amazing mousse made by Eric Ockerhausen.)

  • We are now officially blogging!  Check out our blog on our website at www.makerysvc.com/blog.

  • Don't forget to follow us on Instragram @wendi_makerysvc and like us on facebook at makerysvc--the best way to keep up with current happenings at The Makery!

  • Look for more expanded offerings coming soon, including supply kits in beautiful hand-crafted cases, a small selection of handcrafts from women-run fair trade cooperatives all around the world, and an increased selection of upcycled pieces, including blue jean books, repurposed billboard vinyl, saris, and kimono, and thrift store treasure books, inspired by my recent work with The Independent on an article they did about DIY and upcycling, as well as our artist sketchbooks.
There's always a lot happening at The Makery!  Come join us and let us be your creative outlet. We hope to welcome you into our creative space soon!
