The Makery is one year old!
The Makery Matters - October 2017 Newsletter
October is probably my favorite month of the year. It's officially autumn, and it feels like it. The air is crisp, the trees dot the landscape with their beautiful fall hues, and in the evenings it feels good to snuggle on the couch with a hot cinnamon spice tea or some hot apple cider. (It also happens to be my birth month, so that helps, too.)

It's also a great month for The Makery, because on October 15, we mark the one-year anniversary of our official opening date! It's been an amazing journey so far, and we're just getting started. I would like to thank each and every one of you for the support you've given The Makery over this past year. As a small business, we absolutely would not be here without your support, whether you've taken one of our creative workshops, purchased one of our handcrafted items, or--perhaps most importantly--given your words of encouragement and helped spread the word to others about what we're doing. I believe that there is great potential in the power of creativity to change each person on an individual level, and, in so doing, to change the world. This is my original vision behind The Makery, to empower every person we come in contact with to express their own unique sense of beauty, and we can only do that with the help of all of you. So for that, I thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart. I look forward to many more years of bringing art/craft to everyone!

We have decided to celebrate our First Birthday all month long with some fun special events. Every Saturday, we'll present a new way to experience what we do here at The Makery. Each event will be free, so be sure to join us, and to let others know so they can join in on the fun, too.  Find more details in the newsletter below.

We have some other exciting things coming up, as well, so we hope you'll join us for some just plain creative fun! Here's what you'll find in this month's The Makery Matters:
Happy First Birthday to us!

Join us on Saturdays throughout the month of October to help us celebrate our one-year anniversary.  Here is a schedule of all the (free!) fun stuff:

Saturday, October 7 - The Makery Pop-Up:  Spinning Yarn
Location:  614 North Bullard (in front of Market Cafe)
Time:  8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Join us as we take The Makery out to the streets in the first of two The Makery Pop-Ups. This one will focus on learning to create yarn with a simple wooden drop spindle and a little bit of fluff.  Stop by, even if just for a few minutes, and give it a try!  We'll also have goodies and giveaways, so be sure to come see us on your way to the Farmer's Market (even if you have absolutely no interest in learning how to spin yarn).

Saturday, October 14 - The Makery's First Birthday Celebration (Open House & Studio Tour)
Location:  The Makery, 108 West Yankie
Time:  10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Join us for some traditional birthday cake--even though it's our first birthday, we promise not to smear cake everywhere!--and some other goodies and, of course, exciting giveaways. Come spin the wheel and claim your prize! (We're The Makery. Of course we built a prize wheel for you to spin.) If you (or someone you know) have never visited us at The Makery, this will be the perfect opportunity to stop in and see what we're up to. If you're a Makery veteran, come say hello, check out our new facade re-do, view our photo collage of all the fun we've had over the past year, and see what's new!

Saturday, October 21 - The Makery Pop-Up:  String Art
Location:  614 North Bullard (in front of Market Cafe)
Time:  8:30 a.m. to Noon

The Makery comes to you on the streets once again, this time to bring you the chance to create some truly awesome string art. All materials will, of course, be provided. Just bring your own sense of fun and willingness to try something new. (Stop by anytime between 8:30 and Noon.) Of course, we'll also have, once more, some goodies and giveaways, so be sure to stop by even if you don't want to make some cool string art.

Saturday, October 28 - Broom-making Get-together
Location:  The Makery, 108 West Yankie Street
Time:  4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Awhile back, someone generously donated some locally-grown broom corn, which is used to make old-fashioned brooms. We've never made brooms before, but of course were intrigued by the idea and are up to the challenge. So join us to make a small handbroom the old-fashioned way, just in time for your Halloween/autumn/Thanksgiving decorating! Materials are limited, so be sure to arrive early to claim your spot. We'll also have yummy autumn-themed goodies (pumpkin spice anyone? Or at least some hot apple cider...) and our final round of giveaways for awhile--so stop in even if you don't want to try your hand at broom-making.

We look forward to one fun month. Remember, all of these activities are free. Stop by. Bring a friend. Try something new. We hope to see you soon at The Makery.
Red Hot! Red Dot!

The RED DOT ArtFest 2017 is coming up soon! This weekend, October 7-9, is the RED DOT ArtFest Gallery Weekend, and we are proud to participate. Be sure to come on down to see what all of the galleries have in store. (And don't forget to do the Studio Tour the following weekend, October 14 & 15.)

Stop in at The Makery during the Gallery Weekend and see our brand new line of fully customizable, fully refillable blank books, called Traveler's Notebooks. We are very excited about this new line, as it's been in development for quite some time now.  Each one of these is hand-crafted here in our studio--each is truly one-of-a-kind--with hand-cut, hand-dyed, and hand-finished thick leather covers, clever page markers, awesome pocket folders, and a wide variety of notebook inserts (blank and printed) to customize it to fit your needs exactly. They also feel amaaaazing in your hand--stop in and check them out!

Even though they're called Traveler's Notebooks, they are by no means just for travelers (although they would certainly be handy on any journey). They can be used for almost anything you can imagine--journals, planners, calendars, sketchbooks, budget trackers, memory keepers, bullet journals, recipe keepers, meal planners, financial trackers, food diaries, exercise trackers, wish list holders, to do/to read/to see/to watch/to eat list keepers, and more--or all of the above!

We currently have the 8-1/4" x 4-1/4" size, which we have deemed the "Premier" size, and we will develop smaller sizes soon. Customized Traveler's Notebooks are also an option (cover color, page marker design, inserts, personalization). These are here just in time for your holiday gift-giving and new year planning, so be sure to stop in and see these beauties!

(For all of you out-of-towners reading this, we'll have these books, and all of our others, up on our eCommerce site--coming very soon!)

Also during the RED DOT ArtFest Gallery Weekend is the Red Hot! Red Dot! Art Couture Fashion Show, Sunday, October 8, from 3:30 to 6:30. I'll have three pieces in the show (modeled by my beautiful nieces Izzy and Sophia), and I'm sure it will be a blast, just like last year's event. If you'd like to attend the Fashion Show and Champagne & Chocolates Reception, you must RSVP ahead of time by emailing rebecca@visitsilvercity.org or texting 575-654-4384. There is a $10 suggested donation at the door (but any amount is welcome), and you must be sure to be there by no later than 3:30. Come and join us for this great fun time!

October Creative Workshop Spotlight

Sign up soon for these fun workshops for adults:
  • Bookbinding:  Buttonhole Stitch with a Soft Cover
Come learn this playful stitch that can be used with various covers to create a book that lies open flat, making it easy to write or draw in. In this workshop, you will make and take home one book with a soft vinyl or leather cover, using fun decorative papers to enhance the peek-a-boo window to the book’s spine, and a button closure. (We taught buttonhole stitch last spring, but with a cardstock cover. This time around we'll learn it with a soft, durable cover, so even if you've taken it before, it'll be an excellent opportunity to both review the stitch and try it out with a completely different look.) All tools and materials will be provided for your use in the workshop. Appropriate for all levels.
    Saturday, October 21 – 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
$20 + $10 materials (or $15 materials for leather cover)

  • Freestyle Weaving on an Inkle Loom—Weave a Camera Strap, Key Fobs, or Barrettes
The inkle loom is one of my favorite tools, and it is the perfect small, portable, affordable loom for freestyle weaving straps and anything you can use straps for (key chains, barrettes, camera or guitar straps, etc.). This is quite an unconventional use for this little loom, much different (and easier/more fun!) than the traditional "inkle weaving" that is normally done on this little guy--and there is a special trick to it that you'll learn in this workshop. (This is the perfect weaving to do in front of the TV or on the couch at night!) Plus, you get to play with the treasure baskets! Free yourself and exercise your creativity at this fiber playtime, then craft your weaving into a camera hand strap, key fobs, or barrettes (more than one, if time permits). All tools and materials will be provided for your use during the workshop. (If you have your own inkle loom, or fun “treasures” to add in, feel free to bring them, too!) Appropriate for all levels—even brand new weavers!
    Saturday, October 28 – 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
    $25 + $6 materials

  • Walk In & Weave
Remember our regularly scheduled Walk In & Weave sessions, where the looms are already warped and all the yarns are just waiting for you to come in and weave with them! Weave for two hours, then take your piece home at the end. Sundays @ 2 p.m., Wednesdays @ 6 p.m., and Fridays @ 10 a.m. Click here for more information.
Just one more thing. Remember how I said at the top of the newsletter that October is also my own personal birth month? Because of that, The Makery will be closed from 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 16 through Thursday, October 19. (We are normally closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.) We will open at our normal time on Friday, October 20. As such, Walk In & Weave will be canceled on Wednesday, October 18, and Kids' Weaving will be canceled on Thursday, October 19. Thank you for your understanding.

By the way, do you "like" us? Be sure to "like" us on Facebook to stay up to date with the latest news and happenings at The Makery. And please share our page with your Facebook friends!

Once again, we send you our heartfelt gratitude for all of your support over our first year. We look forward to many more years of creative collaboration with you. Thank you, too, for allowing us to keep in touch with you.  We hope to see you in The Makery very soon!
