From 2 PM to 5 PM tomorrow, April 7, St. Mary Corwin Hospital and LocalFood Pueblo will host a Garden and Food Safety class at NeighborWorks of Pueblo. We have close to a dozen registrants for the class, but if anyone is able and willing to join us last-minute they are welcome. More information about the class and how to register can be found by clicking here.

There is only one day left (deadline: April 7) to register for a Backyard Poultry class hosted by the CSU Extension office of Pueblo County. Details about the class are in the flyer below or in the events listing at the bottom of this newsletter.

NeighborWorks of Pueblo and LocalFood Pueblo are sponsoring the La Familia Community Garden at 814 E. 5th Street, Pueblo CO 81001. Each 3ft x 8ft in-ground garden plot offers you a personal spot to grow fresh vegetables and fruits! A one-time fee of $25 grants you unlimited access to the garden area for the growing season. Included are a timed irrigation system active throughout the summer as well as trash service for garden waste from your individual plot. The garden has nineteen garden plots in total but about 5-10 plots are still available to rent and use this season. Contact Corinne Brown via email at cbrown@nwpueblo.org or phone at 719-423-4424 to reserve your plot. If you like, you can print and share the garden flyer linked here. We would like to have all garden plots rented by May 5 in preparation for a Garden Kick-off Day tentatively scheduled for May 13.

A couple of weeks ago, both Minnequa Elementary and Cesar Chavez Academy (CCA) began building their school gardens. Each school has their own  teams to help build garden beds from recovered materials, mainly recycled wood pallets. Below are a few pictures of in-progress raised garden beds and other garden area equipment at both Minnequa and CCA. Last month’s newsletter included a picture of Ben Franklin’s raised beds garden area.

Some garden artwork completed by students and volunteers at Minnequa Elementary's Botanical Bash event.
The raised garden beds in progress at Minnequa Elementary also constructed during the Botanical Bash event.
Raised garden beds at Cesar Chavez Academy built by their team of leaders the same week that Minnequa began construction of theirs.

It takes all different types of energy and resources (like transportation, electricity, and water) to produce, store, and cook food. Pueblo’s Energy Future is conducting an anonymous survey of Pueblo residents to get a better picture about the needs and desires of the community. The survey should only take about 5 minutes to complete online and can be accessed and completed by clicking here. Please also like and follow PEF on Facebook and share the survey with as many of your Pueblo friends and family as possible.

Finally, local Master Gardener and LocalFood Pueblo contributor Deric Stowell was featured in a Pueblo Chieftain article on March 18 in an article titled “With spring nigh, it’s time to get going in the garden”. You can read the article here.
