A freak lightning storm strikes fishermen in Mpumalanga, South Africa

Two friends were seriously injured after the graphite fishing rod one of them was using was struck by lightning at the Loskop Dam in Mpumalanga.

An observer said, “There was lightning, but nothing serious. The next moment, a massive clap of thunder boomed, and my wife and I jumped in fright.”

BEWARE -- ALL LIGHTNING SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY!

  Director's Note

HAPPY 2019!

This month's lead article above points out a belief that can get us in trouble - assuming that lightning at a distance or that seems to be only in the clouds is 'nothing serious'. ALL lightning has the potential to be dangerous. Lightning can hit up to 10-15 miles (16-24 km) an any direction from a thundercloud. At least 10% of lightning hits when there is no rain in the area and there is frequently 'blue sky' when lightning kills.

It is good to remember that any of the turns and twists of lightning can start it toward the ground.

NEXT MONTH - Links to videos of papers from Malawi, Kenya, and Uganda that ACLENet leaders presented at the American Meteorological Society in January should be posted.

LIGHTNING MYTHS AND FOLKLORE
A common belief in Africa

Among the Agikuyu, Ngai is the creator who made everything. In the beginning, Ngai, which also means sky, was one with the earth and owned all the cattle that lived on it. But one day the earth and sky separated, so that Ngai was no longer among men.

Ngai is a unique and omnipotent God who cannot be seen but is manifested in the sun, moon, stars, comets and meteors, thunder and lightning, rain etc. The Agikuyu community has a close relationship with spiritual entities and believe they are influenced by the supernatural at all times

Lightning is viewed as a visible representation of God, which he uses to warn his people ahead of his coming in order that they prepare the way. This comes from the belief that Ngai comes to earth from time to time to inspect, bestow blessings and give punishment. Thunder is interpreted to be the movement of God from one sacred place to another.

Thanks to Professor Ratemo Michieka from Kenya who provided a rich talk on lightning myths that was presented in January at the American Meteorological Society meeting in Phoenix. You will be reading more from his notes in coming months!
