February 2019

Moisture-rich atmospheric rivers are drenching the Bay Area, and the flowers at Gamble couldn't be happier. Daffodils are beginning to push out of the soil, magnolia trees are bursting into flower, and our famous camellias are reaching full splendor. Gamble has over 50 distinct camellia cultivars or species, including Camellia japonica ‘Kumasaka’, one of the oldest camellias in continuous culture. In fact, Gamble Garden is listed on the American Camellia Society's American Camellia Trail.

If you'd like to learn more about the Gamble camellias, come to Gamble Garden on March 13, 10:00am - 11:30am for our free March Second Saturday event. Garden docents will be pointing out our camellias as they lead visitors on garden tours, and the San Francisco Peninsula Camellia Society will be educating visitors on camellia culture and care.

Photography tips at Gamble
Couples, Engagement, and Wedding Photographs

Love is in the air, and Gamble's romantic atmosphere provides the perfect setting for young lovers to walk hand in hand, pop the question, or celebrate their love in a photograph. Just in time for Valentine's Day, professional portrait photographer Nadine Priestley has some tips for taking photographs that truly capture a couple's feelings for one another:

1. Provide opportunities for the couple to forget they are being photographed.  Most of us are not used to being in front of a camera. For example, I invited the couple in the photo above to put their arms around each other.

2. Lighting matters.  The warmth of putting this couple at an angle where the sun is able to kiss their hair and gently outline the man's shoulder and arm, adds to the romantic feeling created.

3. Relax and let things unfold.  Oftentimes, less is more.  Fewer directions.  Fewer expectations.  Be open to really seeing what is created and have your camera ready!

You'll know you were successful when you make images that evoke emotion... and, most importantly, when the couple feels they have really enjoyed the experience of being photographed!
