Eusea Newsletter February 2017

Dear Eusea members,

I hope you all had a good start in 2017. There is a lot coming up for Eusea this year! But first let´s take a look back: we could welcome eight new members who have joined since summer 2016. That´s a good trend that we want to sustain in the coming months!

Our year started with a Eusea Board Meeting at our new home in Vienna at the Science Center Netzwerk (thanks to Barbara Streicher and her team for your warm welcome and support). In addition to planning new Horizon 2020 projects, we have spent some time to develop the programme for the upcoming Annual Conference in Leuven, 29-30 May 2017. Thank you all for your contributions to the call for proposals. We were very happy to see that so many members and non-members are eager to actively engage at our annual meeting! I think the programme looks very attractive, and we hope meet many of you in Belgium!

Following the conference title “Beyond HORIZONs – Framing the Future”, we would like to continue our discussions on Eusea's future strategy with our members. Where do we want to go in the next five years? How can we align our activities with the goals of RRI, Open Science and Citizen Science? How can we work together to lobby for better science communication in Europe? And how can we respond to an increasingly populistic and anti-scientific environment in Europe and the world?

I personally believe that a network like ours has a lot to contribute to sustaining a society which is open minded and based on scientific evidence rather than populistic claims. Our engagement on a local, national and European level can make a difference. So, let´s work together for these goals at Eusea and in our own institutions and communities.

I´m looking forward to discussing all these issues in Leuven in May! See you there!

Best wishes
Markus Weisskopf

New Horizon Proposals

Since the last newsletter was published, Eusea was invited to join three interesting new HORIZON proposals: These initiatives will focus on topics such as Nanotechnology, Young Entrepreneurship or Citizen Engagement, another upcoming proposal will focus on new collaborations of changing actors. Eusea Director Annette Klinkert joined proposal-preparation-workshops in Brussels and Berlin, she developed Eusea’s tasks and contributions and will actively follow and communicate the outcomes of each project to all Eusea members.
NUCLEUS and PERFORM

Eusea is currently involved in two HORIZON 2020 Projects: NUCLEUS and PERFORM. During the upcoming conference you will have the chance to find out more about these challenging projects in two workshops: One workshop will focus on how performing arts can engage different audiences and the other one will involve a roleplay within the RRI ecosystem. The NUCLEUS project will also host a separate Working Group on the Sunday before the Annual Conference, inviting the 20 designated “Mobile Nuclei” to define the next steps of the project together.
New Collaborations with European Networks

In order to ensure an ongoing capacity-development of our organisation, Eusea is eager to reach out beyond the association’s horizons to exchange ideas with other partners and organisations. To start these new networks a Memorandum of Understanding was developed with the EUPRIO Network, uniting University Press Officers. Closer cooperations are planned with the EUCU.NET community of Children’s Universities and ECSA.
