July is here – the most active month at CRYC.  

Our major event is the Annual Regatta July 26 - 28.  We can use all-hands across the 3 days to do everything from putting up the tent and tables and chairs on Friday; to Race Committee and on shore support for meals and registration on Saturday and Sunday; to disassembly of the tent and return of tables and chairs on Sunday.  This is the one no-fail event of the year for our club and everyone who supports it seems to enjoy themselves.  Please consider volunteering your time to support this major event.  Email to sign up to help.   More information below.

Our other heavy lift for July is new – The Log Canoe Regatta to be held on July 13 and 14.  We are working with Chester River Yacht & Country Club.  Races will be held on both Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday, there will be a social, open to all, with food and drink at 3:30 pm.  Awards will be given after Sunday's races at approximately 4:00 pm. The Bugeye, Edna Lockwood will be on display at our dock.

We were unable to organize the "boat over and watch" of the Rock Hall Fireworks this year.  Rock Hall fireworks will be held on Wednesday, July 3, a work day for many of us.  Feel free to avail yourselves of the grounds and BBQ individually over the holiday.

>Log Canoe Regatta - July 13 - 14

Over the July 13/14 weekend, CRYC will be partnering with Chester River Yacht and Country Club to host the Chester River Log Canoe Series. Races will be in the Chester River off the mouth of the Corsica River.  There will be 2 races Saturday and one Sunday. 

Saturday, after racing, there will be a social event at the Corsica River Yacht Club pavilion beginning at 3:30 pm.  All are welcome to attend. The awards ceremony will be held on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm at the pavilion.  All are invited to come down and watch mast raising and rigging, a daily chore on a log canoe. 
Additionally, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's Bugeye Edna Lockwood is expected to be docked at our pier and be open for tours after her recent rebuild. She is the only log constructed Bugeye still in existence.

>Annual Regatta - July 26 - 28

The Annual Regatta weekend festivities begin with a picnic at 5:30 pm on Friday, July 26. Like last year, Paul Gunther will provide a pig roast. Bring a covered dish/dessert to share.  All hands are invited to attend.

Full schedule - times are tentative and may be adjusted closer to the event:
  • Friday at 9:00 am - work party sets up the tent, tables, and chairs
  • Friday at 5:30 pm - picnic/pig roast.  Bring a covered dish. Drinks provided.  A registration table will be manned prior to the picnic so that racers can check in or register. Merchandise will also be for sale.
  • Saturday morning and afternoon - 8 am - registration begins. Coffee and donuts available before the racing begins.  Harbor gun goes off at 10 am, racing begins at 11 am.
  • Saturday evening at 4:00 pm - Beer truck opens.  5:30 pm - Chicken dinner begins (price $25). Music.
  • Sunday morning and afternoon - 8 am - light breakfast. 10 am - first race. 1:30 pm - grilled lunch, 4:00 pm - regatta ends and cleanup begins.
Reservations to sail and dinner tickets will be made online at

Volunteers are needed for:
  • Race committee boats
  • Beer and wine sales
  • Merchandise sales
  • Registration
  • Setup and Cleanup
  • Food service, lunch packing and distribution

Repairs to docks and the ramp to the floating dock are in the works.  A preliminary design drawing for a new shed to replace the school storage shed has been drafted. Approval is needed from Planning and Zoning and Parks and Recreation before we proceed with the project.

The school storage shed "schoolhouse" has now been turned over to the YMCA for Sailing School and the lock combination has been changed.  If you need sails, blades, paddles, or other equipment to use a club boat please find everything in the blue PADDLE BOX currently located in the pavilion.  It will have all your club fleet needs.  Combo is same as gate.  General members should have no need to access the school storage shed.

We now have for club RC duties 3 handheld VHF radios, one fixed mount radio, 2 FRS band radios, and the PA system.

Junior Regatta on June 26 was hugely successful!

On Wednesday June 26, 2019, 130 junior sailors in 104 boats participated in the Corsica River Junior Regatta.  Twenty-eight new green fleet sailors practiced their seamanship sailing off Ship Point.  43 Opti red, white, and blue sailors completed in 3 tightly fought races.  Lasers and 420 sailors completed near the mouth of the Chester.  High temperatures and dwindling wind conditions made for challenging sailing.  In all, eight clubs from around the Chesapeake Bay were represented.

Thanks to all who volunteered for race committee, registration, and food preparation.  The successful regatta could not happen without your efforts.

Calling all adults who would like to learn to sail or improve their skills!  Emily Turner has offered to give some sailing classes this summer.  Please let us know if you are interested by emailing  A few adults have indicated interest; please let us know if you'd like to join us!

The annual CBYRA/CRYC JUNIOR Regatta took place on June 26 with over 100 Junior participants competing - see more info this issue.

Comet Fleet - Art Silcox

The Comet Fleet will travel to Cambridge YC on 20 July to take part in the Adm Byrd Regatta, looks like will have  at least 8 boats entered. The boats will return to CRYC either Sat night or Sunday to stage for the CRYC Annual Regatta on 27/28 July.

The Comet Fleet is always looking for crew members, no experience necessary, these are 2 person 16’ boats that are fun to sail. For information please call Art Silcox at 571-213-9536.

Laser Fleet - Nicholas Place

The new paddle box now holds a set of blades and sail for one club laser.  Combo is same as gate.  Please ensure you utilize the check out / in form noting any maintenance issues.  Canoes and Kayaks require no “CRYC Board Blessing” to use.  All sailboats do need a board members review prior to first use.

As promised there is now a box to store paddles for all club canoes and kayaks.  The Paddle Box is currently in the pavilion.  When drawing out / returning a paddle please ensure you fill out the check out / in form.  This will help us track maintenance and develop usage data to purchase additional equipment.  Canoes and Kayaks require no CRYC Board “Blessing” to use.  All sailboats do need a board members review prior to first use.

We plan to have a new supply of logo items for sale at the Annual Regatta.  Shirts will be made of wicking fabric to help you keep cool. There will be men's and women's sizes in both long and short sleeve styles.

CRYC logo items may be purchased through Lands' End.  You will need to create your own account and create a library of logos that you can use.  Although there are a few steps involved, it is worth the time setting it all up. When you order an item, you can preview it and adjust the placement of the logo on the garment. 

Here's how to get set up:
  1. Log in or or create an account with Lands' End Business (This is separate from regular Lands' End.)
  2. Once you have created an account and/or signed in, use the drop down menu under your name in the upper right corner to click on "Logos".
  3. Click on "Associate a Logo to my Account"

Wanted Comet Crew – The comet fleet seeks individuals who would like to be introduced to small boat racing / comets.  Attend one race or the whole season.  No experience needed.

Part time Sailing Coach Position - The Gunston School is seeking a qualified Associate Sailing Coach for the 2019-2020 sailing season. Gunston supports a fleet of 12 FJ’s for interscholastic racing within the MDISA and MASSA organizations. Fall sailing practice begins on August 21 and will end the last week of October while spring sailing begins mid-March and concludes mid-May. Sailing practices are after school from 2:20-4:15pm with occasional regatta responsibilities on the weekend.

This is a part-time, stipended position that will report to the Waterfront Director and Director of Athletics. Interested candidates should have extensive sailing experience, competitive coaching experience preferred.
