Professional Development

Mark your calendars for January 24th! Jennifer Vogel had the extraordinary experience of working on the I-35W Mississippi River bridge replacement project as a consultant to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.  She will present on the design and construction process of the replacement bridge and also discuss the impact the bridge collapse had on her and her fellow transportation engineers. More details to come!

Early in 2017, we'll focus on a common New Year's Resolution: wellness! Look out for an event invite for more details.

About half the people on Earth live in an area where snow never falls... must be nice!
Member Spotlight
Meet Janet Willett. Janet is a Product Engineering Manager for Large Tractors at John Deere. She’s been with Deere for 15 years; she has worked in product design, advanced engineering, and Continuous Improvement engineering and is currently an Engineering Manager for a new product program. Janet has been a member of SWE for almost 20 years, and through college recruiting and mentoring has assisted and encouraged women to reach their goals in engineering. She holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Janet enjoys being active in her church, playing with her 4 children and hiking/biking in the woods with her husband.
All About SWENext
Do you know a pre-college aged girl interested in SWE? Encourage her to be a SWENexter! SWENext is a way to become part of the Society of Women Engineers as a student through the age of 18. Any student 13 or older may join SWENext; for those younger than 13, a parent will need to be the primary contact.

Check out their homepage here or email Heidi Kenkel for more information about how to get signed up.
Past Event Highlights

December Networking: Stam Chocolaterie

Our December networking event featured lots of chocolate. Members old and new met up at Stam Chocolaterie to learn more about each other, membership in SWE, and what CV SWE is all about!

November Outreach: CV STEM Festival & Girl Scout Career Rally

November was all about outreach! First, SWE teamed up with John Deere's Employee Resource Group, Women in Operations, to teach kids about electrical circuitry using holiday lights. The following Saturday, a few of our members hosted a booth at the Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois Girl Scouts' Career Rally where they taught Girl Scouts of all ages about careers in engineering.

November: WE16 Conference

Our members had an awesome time at SWE's national conference, WE16! Attendees got to enjoy full days of networking, awards, teambuilding and volunteering sessions, and the WE16 Career Fair. Our own Janet Willett earned the Emerging Leader Award; this award honors any woman engineer who has been actively engaged in an engineering or technology profession, has demonstrated outstanding technical excellence as an individual resulting in significant accomplishments, and has 10 to 15 years of cumulative engineering experience. Congratulations, Janet!

October Networking: Cedar Valley Art & Wine

Our October networking event at Cedar Valley Art and Wine brought painting, along with yummy treats and wine! Each woman painted a "Harvest Moon," and had fun showcasing their unique painting abilities. It was interesting to see how each woman ended up with her own one-of-a-kind painting!

October: Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference

CV SWE hosted the 4th annual EYH conference at UNI on Saturday, October 15th. 155 girls were in attendance. Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a conference for girls in grades 5 through 8. The day-long event included hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). At the conference, the girls were able to meet STEM role models and learn more about careers in those fields. The ultimate goal of the conference was to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st Century challenges.
