M4A IS SEEKING DONATIONS TO HELP SENIORS KEEP WARM DURING THE WINTER MONTHS

Winter weather is upon us and the Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging (M4A) wants to make sure seniors who may be on a limited income and unable to afford to heat their homes properly can receive a portable electric space heater at no charge.

M4A seeks monetary or heater donations across Blount, Chilton, Shelby, St. Clair, and Walker counties. The heaters must be portable, electric and have a fan capability rather than coil heating capability for safety reasons. If you wish to make a monetary donation, checks can be made payable to Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 618, Saginaw, AL  35137. If you wish to donate a heater, please call M4A at (205) 670-5770 and we can make arrangements to pick it up at your convenience.

BEWARE OF THIS SCAM ENTITLED "THE GRANDPARENT SCAM"

A senior gets a call in the middle of the night. The caller claims to be a grandchild or other family member who needs immediate help and money. The caller may say he or she is in jail, got into an automobile accident, or is out of the country and needs money. The unsuspecting senior is completely caught off guard and wants to help the loved one. The caller asks for money to either be wired, or for the senior to purchase a prepaid debit or credit card, or iTunes card and to keep the call confidential.

M4A encourages seniors to be aware of this scam. If you receive a call like this, please verify the information you are being told. Ask questions of the caller that only the caller, if a legitimate relative, can answer. Do not send money, and make sure to report the scam to the Alabama Attorney General's Office by calling the Consumer Hotline at (800) 392-5658.
