NEWSLETTER

Every four years, Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging (M4A), as well as all other Area Agencies on Aging (AAA), develop a four-year Area Plan. The Area Plan describes the function of Aging and Disability Services at the local AAA, as well as presents relevant demographic trends and outlines the goals and objectives to be achieved over the course of four years.

Each AAA also prepares an annual update called an Annual Operating Plan (AOP) or Annual Operating Element (AOE). Area Plans and AOP/AOE’s are submitted by M4A to the Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS), which is Alabama’s State Unit on Aging.

The 2018–2021 Area Plan for M4A is available HERE. For a three-page summary, click HERE.

For more information about Area Plan development, contact Administrative Director Crystal Crim at ccrim@m4a.org.

M4A received a one-year grant from the Walker Area Community Foundation which began January 1st. The grant provides M4A the resources needed to provide 30 low-income homebound seniors with nutritious delivered meals, regular nurse visits, and social support in Walker County. These individuals have been on our waiting list and very much need our help. We are so grateful for the partnership of the Walker Area Community Foundation

M4A is very excited about this grant and gives a big SHOUT OUT to the Walker Area Community Foundation for their support to these individuals who are home bound and in the greatest need to receive these valuable services. We also thank their funding partners (Bankhead Fund, Community  Fund, Reed Family Fund) who made this grant possible.
Our State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) staff and certified counselors worked hard during Medicare's Open Enrollment (Oct 15 - Dec 7) to assist Medicare beneficiaries navigate their coverage, run plan comparisons, enroll in Part D Advantage Plans, and coordinate benefits.  We are happy to report that over 1,198 beneficiaries were helped and SHIP was able to save over $873,000 in total for individuals who switched to a more cost-effective Medicare plan. THANK YOU SHIP FOR YOUR GREAT WORK!
DEMENTIA FRIENDLY PROJECT UPDATE

M4A had the opportunity to reach out to the Alabama Association of the Chiefs of Police this week and they were gracious enough to share our Dementia Friendly Law Enforcement and First Responder training opportunity with all of the local Police Chiefs across the state. We have received a great response from
from them showing an interest to be trained and designated as "dementia friendly departments". M4A is working with the other local Area Agencies on Aging who will be trained to train their local law enforcement and first responders in their service area. MORE INFORMATION TO COME!
