M4A's State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) has certified counselors who will help beneficiaries with their coverage, such as Medicare Supplements, Medicaid, Medicare Savings Programs, Prescription Drugs, Plan Comparisons, Billing and Claims, Rights and Protections, and Long-term Care Options.
SHIP counselors and volunteers work year round to help beneficiaries with their Medicare issues. They also serve as the local Medicare experts and are available to provide training on Medicare and other related insurance coverage topics.  During the Medicare Open Enrollment period (October - December), counselors conduct free health plan comparisons and enroll individuals in the plan of their choice.

SHIP is always looking for volunteers! If you are interested in serving as a volunteer for the SHIP program, contact LaToya Shelton today at (205) 670-5770 or

Dementia Friendly Communities are communities that create a culture that is dementia friendly. Such communities embrace, support, and properly respond to residents with dementia and their caregivers.

M4A received a special grant to develop a new Law Enforcement and First Responder Dementia Training Toolkit and dementia friendly resource materials.

M4A will schedule and conduct training events for the City of Alabaster and Shelby County law enforcement personnel and then expand this training initiative to other M4A service area communities. To get more information on this exciting initiative, contact Robyn James at (205) 670-5770 or

Our partner, American Family Trust (AFT) wins state award for commitment to the elderly!

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Alabama Family Trust has been selected to receive the Alabama Gerontological Society’s 2017 Organization Award at their 36th Annual Conference for AFT’s commitment to improving the quality of life for older Alabamians.

AFT is a pooled special needs nonprofit 501(c)3 trust established by the state in 1994 to invest and protect assets of individuals with disabilities, including the elderly. AFT allows families to protect assets in a pooled special needs trust and enable their disabled senior to be eligible for Medicaid benefits. Once qualified, Medicaid would pay for long-term care in a skilled nursing home or for caregivers at home while the assets put in trust can then be used to pay for needed services or items not covered by Medicaid.  To learn more click here

Enable Alabama:  The ABLE Account Plan for Alabama Citizens
The Enable Alabama Savings Plan is Alabama’s new ABLE Act account program.  The ABLE Act allows individuals with disabilities to save funds for their future in an income tax-free account that does not count as part of the $2,000 resource limit.  Enable Alabama helps individuals with disabilities save up to an additional $14,000 per year to pay for qualified disability expenses without affecting their “means-tested” benefits, such as SSI and Medicaid. Come learn about this new opportunity on May 16 - 17 at a special event located at the United Ability Administration Building, 100 Oslo Circle, Birmingham, AL 35211. Contact United Ability for more information.
