M4A partnered with the UAB School of Dentistry and the Capstone Rural Health Clinic to provide free dental examinations for 14 seniors in need of this service in the City of Nauvoo, Walker County. The event was held on Friday, March 10th at the Capstone Rural Health Clinic. Four UAB Dental students accompanied Dr. Lillian Mitchell, UAB School of Dentistry, to provide the free dental examinations. After the examination, those who need additional dental assistance will receive it at little or no cost to them. The UAB School of Dentistry is committed to helping adults maintain good oral health. Similar events are planned across the state.

Capstone Rural Health is a medical clinic with three separate locations in Walker county. Capstone Rural Health Clinic provides access to affordable primary, preventive and wellness services. They also provide free transportation services to medical appointments for established patients. Established patients, a patient with a minimum of one medical visit at a Capstone Rural Health location and a signed Liability Waiver Form, are eligible for transportation services. Patients must have a scheduled medical appointment at a Capstone Rural Health location and be placed on the transportation schedule to reserve a spot for patient transport. Capstone provides a wonderful service in the rural part of the state.

Senior Smiles and Health
Written by: Dr. Lillian Mitchell, UAB School of Dentistry

If eyes are the windows to the soul, then what is a smile?  A smile often tells a person’s mood or how they are feeling.  A healthy smile also gives clues to overall health.  As we age, it is important to maintain oral health so that we can communicate with our friends and loved ones and continue to eat well.  Good oral health prevents disease and contributes to a healthy, positive quality of life.
