Good Reasons to Call Parents

I can remember as a beginning teacher being apprehensive about calling a parent whose child had created some serious problem in the classroom or continued to make failing grades. I wondered if the parents would argue with me, take the child’s side and ignore my efforts, or simply not return the call. In my training, I learned to start with something complimentary about the child, give the bad news and discuss how to solve the problem, and close with a positive thought about the child.
