Unexpected Opportunities

“Dr. Alsip, can I talk to you?” A tearful voice came from my doorway at school. I looked up from the paperwork on my desk and saw a young woman with a troubled look on her face. I invited her into my office and walked around my desk to sit next to her.  

As we talked, she revealed that she had taken an over-the-counter test that morning and found out she was pregnant. Her boyfriend was 19 years old and unemployed. She was a junior in high school. She was afraid to tell her mother because her mother had given birth to her when she was only 16 years old. This girl knew how disappointed her mother would be. The girl said she was thinking strongly about having an abortion so no one else would know about the pregnancy.
