What Are Professional Learning Communities and Can They Have an Impact on My School?

Recently, our administrators at the Science Academies of New York Charter Schools met with a consultant to explore ways of supporting our teachers to improve student achievement in a very challenging urban school system. During that conversation, the topic of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) was introduced by the consultant, who had been working with other schools in the implementation of teacher-led teams to look at data and make plans to improve the success rate of students. The conversation led me to explore PLCs further and to answer for my own interest how those are different than other committees or teams with similar goals. The purpose of this article is to share with our NEW educators what I have learned.
