Gotta love teenagers. They think they’re invincible. Take, for example, a certain 18-year-old Ralph Samuelson. Way back in 1922, before the term ‘teenager’ was even invented, Samuelson had an idea. Perhaps others had also had the same idea. But foolhardy Samuelson did something no other person had done: he put it into action. On 31st July 29, Ralph Samuelson was the first person to wear his skis. In the water. And so water skiing was invented.
As our next Bonfire @ Desire Open Mic Night falls on Tuesday 31st July, we’ve decided to acknowledge Samuelson’s historic hi-jinks. But whatever you know about the term ‘jump the shark’ and its origins (that season five episode of Happy Days in which the Fonz, clad in customary leather jacket, also donned water skis and swimming trunks, and jumped a shark!) know this also: Henry Winkler, who played the Fonz, can actually water ski. For realsies. He was, in fact, a water ski instructor.
So, as ever: you don’t have to adhere to the theme if you want to perform on the night. Anything you want to share is what we want to enjoy.
But if you do want to reference the theme, think:
Extreme sea food;
Changes of direction (disastrous or otherwise);
Bizarrely successful inventions;
On the night: show begins 8pm sharp.
Performers: arrive 7:30pm even if you intend to be on in the second half.
Order of performance = order of arrival and registration.
Entry by gold coin donation.
