What a great end to July/beginning to August; on Tuesday 31st we celebrated our Bonfire @ Desire Open Mic night, as we normally do. But what a celebration! It was special for two reasons: firstly, we were doing our first event with our brand-spanking-new sound desk, speakers, microphones, leads and mic stands. It sounded spectacular. I can't reproduce it in print for you here, but have a look at the difference between our original unit (below right) and the new one (left)!
If that wasn’t enough, we also launched our new publication, …the poetry of desire. It includes work by some Bonfire regulars, and is open to contributions. Issue #00 (July 2018) is available now for the princely sum of… pay whatever you like! See below for images of the publication, being launched by former owner of Desire, Andy Franks (publication and Andy not actual size, nor to scale).
Now check out some of the stuff we have going on and coming up.

Writers Rumble Returns
Writers Rumble is a group for aspiring writers of all levels and genres to come share, discuss and review each other’s work.
We aim to provide a safe environment for valid criticism while supporting your creativity and growth as a writer.
Writers Rumble is hosted by Desire Books and Records at the shop, 3/3 Whistler St, Manly, on the second Tuesday of every month.
Our next session will be on 14 August at 7pm.
Bring 6-8 copies of something you're working on, and the group will kindly-yet-thoroughly polish your work until it shines like the moon.
If you’re coming to the next session, please email Kiah Daly so that we know how many we’ll have.
Our next Children’s Story Time takes place Friday 17 August. This is specifically designed for the kids who aren’t at school or kindy, to attend with their mums (or dads/grannies/nannies/au pairs/pops/memaw/governesses/fairy godmothers), with stories, sing-a-longs and some audience participation.
If you’ve got a child, or know someone else who does, who’d be interested, please let them know. (And let us know if they/you are coming.)
“All I have to do is dream,” the Everly Brothers once sang. “Dream, dream,” as it were, and, furthermore, “dream.”
Whether or not your dreams of Jeanie (if you have them) are of Barbara Eden in an ornate bottle, or with light brown hair, or, like Don McLean, sans Jeanie are just of castles in the air, know this:
On August 28th 1963, that the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr – civil rights leader and Baptist Minister – delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech at Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.
Thus, our Bonfire @ Desire Open Mic Night theme, 55 years later (to the day), is all about dreams and dreaming. You don’t have to adhere to the theme, but if you want, free-associate around some of the following
Flights of fancy;
Hopes and aspirations;
On the night: show begins 8pm sharp.
Performers: arrive 7:30pm even if you intend to be on in the second half.
Order of performance = order of arrival and registration.
Entry by gold coin donation.
