...weekly bulletin...

March 9, 2023
Dear <<First Name>>,

International Coalition of Girls’ Schools (ICGS)

North Point School for Girls is proud to announce that we have become a founding member of the International Coalition of Girls' Schools. As such, we are part of a strong and transformational network of schools dedicated to an urgent and enduring cause – educating and empowering girls to be ethical, globally minded changemakers.

Thank you to all of you who came to the Checkpoint meetings last week. I am proud that over 90% of the families from Richmond participated in the interviews. It is this commitment and teamwork that makes North Point the special place that it is.

We are just over two weeks away from our Spring Break and we are excited for the many special events that we have in that short time.

  • The 5/6 and grade 6 classes will be going out tomorrow to the Richmond/Knob Hill community rink for a skate and winter fun.

  • Passion projects will be presented on Tuesday, March 21 between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM and we encourage family members to support our boys in their unique interests by joining us.

  • Our boys are also getting excited for our annual ski trip that will take place on March 24, which is the last day before the break.

We would also like to let you all know that we will have three University of Calgary student teachers joining us for their four-week practicum starting next week. Cory Saavedra will be working with Lance in Phys. Ed., Hung Nguyen will join Scott's classes and Justin Royer will be working with Jason. We are excited to welcome them and show them what North Point School for Boys is all about.

We are also working on a couple of other fun events and will share more information with you as the details become available. Thank you again for your support in all of our endeavours. We are all fortunate to be a part of such a kind, caring and positive community.

Play-in-a-day

March 17

This St. Patrick’s Day, North Point students in grades 7-12 will get to see how the professionals bring stories to life on stage in just one hour! That’s right–from the page to the stage in under 60 minutes! Theatre educator Aliza Sarian will introduce students to the various roles in a theatre process from directors and actors to designers and stage managers. This workshop will be the first step towards North Point’s new After School Theatre Club – get students excited about what’s possible.

NEW After School Theatre Club

Following the success of last year’s Theatre Lunch Club’s production of 5 Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, and building on the Play-in-a-day workshop, we are exploring North Point’s new After School Theatre Club. Use the QR codes or links below for a survey to help us gauge students' interest in a Theatre Club for grades 7-12 this spring at the Currie Campus.

Passion Project Presentations

March 20-21

Passion Projects are an opportunity for students to research a topic, any topic, that they are passionate about. They will then present their research in a showcase set up at each campus.Currie students will present on Monday morning and Richmond students will present on Tuesday afternoon 1:00-2:00pm (PLEASE NOTE THE DAY CHANGES). Parents and family are welcome to come check it out. We are looking forward to seeing what our students are passionate about!

Young Entrepreuner's Busines Fair

Save the Date: Coming Sunday, June 4th

The Young Entrepreneurs Business Fair is a real-life marketplace where North Point students exhibit and sell products or services to potential customers. The money generated from sales belongs to them.

On June 4, hundreds of Calgarians (including you, we hope!) will come to WinSport and shop at the dozens of small businesses managed by our young entrepreneurs from Gr. K-12. This is our 6th annual Fair, which has grown into Canada’s largest student business fair. It is free and open to the public.

Check out our new webpage, Business Fair Resources for Students & Parents, with dates, guidelines, FAQs, business ideas, sponsorship information, and other valuable information.

Stay tuned for more information about online business plans, posters and more. If you want to volunteer or become a sponsor/donor, contact Bruce Groberman, Director of Financial Education, at bgroberman@northpoint.school.

High School Students Get Personalized Tour of Exhibit

The High School Art, Media, and Outdoor Ed options had the opportunity to meet Charles Stankievech as he toured North Point around his exhibit, The Desert Turned to Glass, at Contemporary Calgary on Friday. They took a journey through a timeline of the earth’s ecosystems, as they engaged with installations and a video on the dome screen! A huge thank you to the Hark family for this experience!

Gr. 8/9 are Contestants at Telus Spark

Action Day for the Gr. 8s and 9s took them to the Telus Spark science centre. Students were engaged in a gameshow style activity "Who wants to be a Multicellular Organism" for about 40 mins.  This endeavor reviewed many of the concepts taught in our “Cells and Body Systems” unit in Gr. 8 science. Students also viewed an interactive exhibit "HOCKEY – Faster Than Ever", which many found informative and fun!  Finally, students were afforded the opportunity to explore the science centre's numerous educational displays with their peers!

On March 10th, the first annual junior high debate tournament will be taking place for Gr.  8 & 9 students at the Currie Campus. All students are involved in the competition as debaters, judges, chairpersons, and timekeepers. By debating both sides of a resolution in separate rounds, teams will engage in perspective taking, strategic questioning, active listening, clashing, and public speaking. This year's resolution guides students to explore topics such as taxation, public spending, private investment, inflation--and hockey!

"Be it resolved that the Government of Alberta and the City of Calgary provide significant public funds for a new Calgary Flames facility."

Physical Education

In physical education class on the Richmond campus, we will be exploring racket/paddle and striking sports (including badminton and pickle pall) over the next few weeks!

Athletics

Basketball

It was a great basketball season and our final two teams (Gr. 8 and Gr. 9) played this past week. The Gr. 8's played with confidence and determination to upset their opponents and win the Bronze medal game at our Hounsfield Heights gymnasium. The Lycee Louis Pasteur team defeated our boys earlier in the season so it was satisfying to see that the work that they put in and the growth that they showed came together perfectly to make a storied finish.

After winning a thrilling semi final last week, the Our Gr. 9 team was back at Rundle Academy for the Championship match.  This time, they had the onerous task of playing in front of the home team (Rundle Academy) fans who came out in numbers. Fortunately, North Point was well represented with their own supporters as friends, family, and teachers came out to watch for this exciting final and cheer them on. This support, along with some great coaching really made a difference. There were some nerves showing in the beginning as our Navigators were down by 10 points early in the first quarter. With a true display of Resilience our Gr. 9's continued to push back. The effort on all parts of the court was Relentless and as a result, they earned the gold medals and championship banner!  Well Done!

Congratulations to all of the Jr High basketball teams on a great season:

Grade 7 (coach Hirtle) - Silver

Grade 8 (coach Hirtle) - Bronze

Grade 9 (coach Restie/ Works) - Gold

After School Basketball Academy

GRADE 3-6

While our Navigator school team basketball is now officially complete, we do have the excitement of running our after school Basketball Academy (with Legends Basketball club) and we held our first session this week. After athletes were sized up for their team shirt, they had a chance to show what they know, practice a few fundamentals, and get into game situations!  Due to the fantastic turnout, two groups will be formed. Adjusting to the coaches current availability, the Grade 5/6 group will be practicing after school on Mondays (3:30 - 5:00pm) and the 3/4 group will be practicing on Wednesdays (3:30 - 5:00pm).  Legends Basketball will contact the families of participants with all details.
