...weekly bulletin...

January 12, 2023
Dear <<First Name>>,

TBT

As we settle into the new routine of 2023, we can’t help but remember the excitement of the last days of school before the break - so here are some Throwback Thursday pictures of the Richmond Campus Art Option making ornaments.

Happy new year from the staff at the Richmond Campus. We trust everyone had a good break and we are excited for what the rest of the school year will bring!

It was nice to welcome the boys back this week and we already have some exciting plans in the works! We are finalizing the details for some of our students to attend the TELUS Be Brave Hitmen Hockey game in February and our K - 2 class is planning a trip to Studio Bell: Home of the National Music Centre at the end of this month. These are just a couple of the exciting things we are working on for this new year. We will keep you apprised of the other activities we are planning.

We are also getting ready for our 5/6 to grade 7 students to write their midterm exams. You can see the schedule here.  You will receive more details from the Mentor Teachers in the coming days.

Happy New Year and welcome back to school!

2023 is a new year, with new opportunities, and at Currie Campus... the launch of new schedules! Reflecting on our start to the year with our Currie Campus growth and always keeping student benefits, staff wellness, high-quality programming, and relationship building at the forefront, we made some significant changes to our timetable that will be in effect starting next week, Monday, January 16.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Maximizing time at MRU for physical education. Our students will see nearly an hour more per week of gym time!
  • Increased time with mentor teachers.
  • Transition times between periods.
  • A morning wellness break.

Mark your calendars

February 3 is a Non-instructional Day and there will be no classes for students. Our Teachers’ Convention is Feb. 16-17 so there will be an extra, extra long weekend for students with Family Day being on Feb. 20. Checkpoint meetings will be March 1-2, the system will open for booking on Feb. 22. The ski day at Nakiska will be on March 24.

A Theatre Opportunity is Coming!

Grade 7 students at Richmond campus as well as Grade 8-12 students and the Girls School at Currie Campus will explore, produce, and perform a theatrical production, directed by our returning resident performing arts expert, Aliza Sarian.

On Friday, March 17, these students will engage in a 1-hour workshop to introduce students to a rapid-fire version of the production process. Students will perform content and be cast in roles such as actors, directors, designers, and production stage management. In addition to this, the Girls School will engage in a Performing Arts Residency in late April/ early May as part of their options programming.

A survey will follow just before the spring break for students and parents to complete, asking for interest in attending a 6-week after school theatre program that will run in April and May at Currie Campus. Stay tuned - it would be very exciting to have lots of North Point interest!

Physical Education

Happy New Year and all the best from the North Point Physical Education department!

We are kicking off the year by focusing on the theme of effort this month.  Students who show Relentless effort (from beginning - Warm up; middle - skill building; and end of class - games), may even earn a star of the day (and Relentless "R").

In some classes, we are also using games and play to have Socratic discussions around rules we know.  It is incredible to see the thoughtful and creative ideas that students have proposed and implemented and the meaningful discourse that has taken place in an effort to make the games more interesting, fair and fun!

Athletics

Basketball

Our Basketball season kicked off in earnest with all three Jr High Teams involved in games on Tuesday. These games were well played by all athletes and great growth is happening on the court! We had two narrow losses in grade 7 and 7/8 and a win for our grade 9 squad this week!.  Well done and good luck on your next outing!

Curling

Our curlers are also taking it to the next level with league play starting next week.  Players had a final practice this past Wednesday to help determine the rosters for our two teams who will compete for the Open and Men's Curling banners!
