A message from the President
Richard Cooper, President

Dear Parents,

Staverton Kindergarten is renowned for its historic building, beautiful grounds and exceptional quality of teaching, however it also has a long and proud tradition of possessing a great family ethos and sense of community.  It gives me great pleasure to extend a very warm welcome on behalf of our Staff and Committee to both our new and returning families in 2017.  I invite and encourage everyone to attend and be involved in your children's kindergarten experience this year, to attend the numerous events and functions we will be holding and to become part of the Staverton community. I hope all your children have settled in nicely and are enjoying the opening weeks of their kindy year.  It promises to be a very enjoyable and rewarding year for our children and families alike.

I would like to thank all those who have volunteered to be involved in this years Committee.  Everyone has already been hard at work organising our numerous functions and events for the year.  The Welcome Picnic held in week two was a well attended and enjoyable start to the social calendar and gave everyone a chance to meet new friends, mingle and catch up with old friends.  Please mark in your diaries the Kindy Disco to be held on Friday March 17 and the Parents Gala Dinner on Saturday May 6.   In order for the Disco to run smoothly we require some volunteers to assist on the evening.  An hour of your time to assist would be enormously appreciated so please approach your class rep or teacher and add your name to the roster.

In the lead up to Easter, Nantucket Kitchen and Bar have kindly offered to assist Staverton in conducting a wine drive featuring the exceptionally popular and premium Wild Rock brand.  Wild Rock (by Craggy Range) is a producer of premium crafted wines from New Zealand’s prime wine growing regions of Hawkes Bay and Marlborough.   We will be providing further details in coming weeks.

Over recent years and again in 2017 we have been very generously supported by our lead sponsors Cameron Crouch Ray White Sherwood and Bank of Queensland.  The contributions of these businesses have been greatly appreciated and as always we ask parents to support those that support our children where possible.

I would also like to thank Fiona Bird and the committee of 2016 for the wonderful job they did last year. Staverton has been a significant beneficiary of their efforts and dedication which has allowed the culture, teaching standards and environment that our children enjoy in 2017 to continue to thrive.

I wish your children a throughly enjoyable year of learning and development at Staverton and look forward to meeting you all during the year.  If I can be of any assistance to you throughout 2017 please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards

Richard Cooper

Directors' Report
Kate Beutel, Director

Newsletter 1 2017

A warm welcome to all our Staverton families for 2017. The Kindy team are very excited about our year ahead and we have all been enjoying getting to know your families over the last few weeks. There are 7 staff at Staverton.

Gungun – Mrs Kristy Coombs and Mrs Angela Strickland

Kabarla – Mrs Kate Beutel, Mrs Mina Kevat and Mrs Lee-Anne Harvey

Gwala – Mrs Judy Ford and Mrs Lee-Anne Harvey

Walan – Mrs Kristy Coombs, Mrs Mina Kevat and Ms Kristy Trigar

Admin – Mrs Donna Williams (Tues-Thur)

Director – Mrs Kate Beutel in the office every second Wednesday.

It has been a wonderful start to the year with all classes settling in well. We thank the families for assisting us with these transitions, as we know it can be very daunting for not only the children but parents as well.  It is great to hear of the many class catch ups that are already occurring this year. This is a great way to meet new families and possibly forever friends.  The welcome picnic was a great night and we thank those that helped to organise the evening.

Just a reminder to ensure that all children remain of the playground equipment before and after kindy for safety reasons. No staff outside means no play.  We thank you for helping us with this. Please also ensure that children stay away from the pond area as we have noticed that some toddlers have been placing sand in the pond and this will break the filter in time.

To reduce the spread of germs please wash hands on arrival and departure. WE have hand sanitiser on the verandas for your convenience or please use the bathrooms.  The children are guided with hand washing throughout the kindy day to reduce the spread of germs and learn about personal hygiene.

If you would like to look at the kindy polices at anytime they are located in the office. Please see Donna or your classroom teacher should you have any queries. Throughout the year policies will be reviewed or amended. We will notify you of this with a sign on the verandas. You are then welcome to offer your input at committee meetings.

On each veranda you will see a suggestion box please feel free to add your thoughts and ideas to this box or come in and see me.

Thank you to the staff for conducting their information nights. We hope that you found these sessions worthwhile. Coming up in week 7 and 8 the teachers will be offering parent teacher interviews where they will talk about how your child is settling in to the kindy year.

All classes have enjoyed a visit from Healthy Harold and learning about everyday foods and sometimes foods.

Please see attached the fundraising calendar for the year. Please note that this year the fundraising team is very small and with out your support during the events they may need to be cancelled. The disco is coming up and there is a sheet for volunteers to offer their time to help on some of the shifts.

Thank you to the Kabarla group for being in charge of this term’s Working bee. We appreciate you volunteering your time to make our kindy beautiful!

If you are looking for what is happening in the Staverton community facebook is a great way to find out information. There are many posts this year keeping you up to date and also letting you know about some wonderful things happening in our wider community. Thank you Jean for doing such a great job!

Spotlight on a staff member:

Hi,

My name is Angela Strickland and I am the educator in the Gun Gun group.

I have two beautiful children of my own, Sophie 10 and Charlotte 7.  As a family we love to spend time at the beach, and Walk up Mount Cootha with our dog Diesel.

Working with young children has always been a passion of mine.  One of the highlights of my days working at kindy would be when I see the children's eyes light up and the smiles on their faces when they learn/try something new.

I am looking forward to spending 2017 with a lovely group of children as well as getting to know their families.

Here is a delicious recipe I would love to share. It's been a popular lunchbox snack for my children.

Lunchbox mini meatballs

100g parmesan cheese

Roughly 40g spinach (zucchini or other vegetables)

500g mince

1 tsp salt

1tsp onion powder

1tsp garlic powder

Pinch of pepper

Oil for frying.

Chop the veggies and Parmesan cheese up in a food processor. Combine all ingredients together and roll balls. The cook in frying pan.

Serve with your favourite sauce.

Kristy Coombs…..

My name is Mrs Coombs and I teach in Unit 1. I am currently the teacher of both the Gungun and Walan classes and have been excited to get to know everyone as we start a new Kindy year.

I am married with 2 children aged 12 and 9 who attend Indooroopilly High and Graceville State School. Originally from Lowood, I spend some time in the Lockyer Valley where my family still live. I love cooking, cross stitch and Sunday drives.

I am lucky to work with a fantastic group of professional, dedicated and supportive staff and blessed to spend every day helping your beautiful children discover and grow.

The best part of my job is the special connection I make with children and their families and the continuity of the relationship. There is no other job like it!

We hope you have a wonderful year being part of the Staverton Kindy Community.

Can you help?

We are on the look out for a comfy chair to replace the broken teacher's chair in Unit 2. If you have one we could have please inform one of the teachers. We are also after 2 trestle tables, some fairy lights and 2 cash tills.  Please let us know if you are able to donate these to the kindy.
