Thank You, Governors!

Welcome to the second edition of ‘Thank You, Governors!’, the termly update to all governors in church schools from the Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE)! The main purpose of this update is to list the themes which will be covered in this term’s SDBE ‘Governor Briefing’
and to highlight any key recent news/publications for governors.
The publication has deliberately been named as ‘Thank You, Governors’ because that is our opening line any time that we work with governors … THANK YOU for your time, THANK YOU for your commitment and THANK YOU for making a positive difference to the lives and opportunities for children and young people!

Governor Briefing- Friday 19th May 

On Friday 19th May, between 9am and 12pm, I will be running the third SDBE Governor Briefing of the academic year at the Diocesan Education Centre in Wilton!  All governors are welcome!  If you are already booked on, then Anna Tucker will be sending out reminders shortly. Church Of England Voluntary Aided (VA) and Voluntary Controlled (VC) School Foundation Governor Appointment Policy

The SDBE will shortly be launching an updated policy regarding the appointment of Foundation Governors in Voluntary Aided (VA) and Voluntary Controlled (VC) schools.  There is a matching suite of forms linked with the policy.  This is an exciting development and means, for the first time, that the SDBE has a robust policy including a step-by-step guide about the process and procedure for appointing Foundation Governors.  I look forward to writing to you with full details later this term!

Partnership Service Agreement (PSA) 2017/ 18

In March the Director of Diocesan Education, Canon Joy Tubbs, wrote to all schools/academies in the diocese to share information about our diocesan Partnership Service Agreement (PSA) for 2017-2018 and I have uploaded both the letter and the information leaflet here, for your information.

The PSA lies at the heart of our Board of Education relationship with schools and we are encouraging school leaders to subscribe to this important partnership at the very reasonable cost of £575 for the year.  As the information leaflet shows, this provides the school with a wide-ranging number of opportunities with the Board of Education.  We look forward to continuing our close partnership with schools.

We also offer a school improvement partner relationship with schools and many schools are benefiting from working closely with a diocesan adviser on all aspects of their improvement work.  This is called ‘Challenge and Support Partner’ or CASP.  Full details here.

CEO/ Head Teacher/ Head of School Appointments within the SDBE

A reminder that the SDBE continues to provide a totally free advisory service for all schools … and this includes schools within MATs … to support the appointment of CEOs / Head Teachers / Heads Of School.  The SDBE recognises the hugely significant impact of leadership on the life and outcomes of a school.  We also understand the vital importance of church schools being led by leaders who are committed to the notion of church school distinctiveness.  While we do not have voting rights in the appointment process, it is important to us that we are invited to advise.  This is why there is no cost for the service.
I would like to thank those of you who have worked, or are currently working, in partnership with us for school leader appointments.

Governors Role in Self Evaluation of Your Church School
22nd September 2017
Self-Evaluation of your church school … sharing expectations and empowering with examples!  Great especially if you are preparing for SIAMS within the next three years!

New Foundation Governor Training
In line with the SDBE’s ‘Church of England Voluntary Aided and Voluntary Controlled School Foundation Governor Appointment Policy’, it is a requirement for all new (and newly-appointed to a further term) Foundation Governors to attend this half-day course which shares and explores the expectations and role of Foundation Governors.  The Foundation Governor Programme is part of the PSA Subscription entitlement, and FREE to attend for PSA subscribed schools.  For those schools who are not subscribed to the PSA, the cost to attend will be £120 + VAT per delegate (for which an invoice will be raised at the time of the booking.)
Existing Foundation Governors are also welcome to take part in this opportunity as well!

• 27th September 2017 - The Diocesan Education Centre, Wilton SP2 0FG 1800 - 2100hrs
• 28th September 2017 - The Dorford Centre, Dorchester 1300 - 1600 hrs
