Five16 Film Festival
is Going Virtual!
Five 16 Film Festival - Northwestern Productions film workshop students have been hard at work spreading the word about the rescheduled film festival date: September 21, 2020 at 7:00 p.m..

"Since the pandemic conditions have not improved enough to have an in person film festival, we decided to go virtual for the rescheduled festival."

All the latest information on the upcoming 14th Annual Film Festival can be found on their social media sites: Instagram and Facebook.
Recent graduate Amanda Gattorna ('20) has landed full-time job at Life 102.5 Madison.

What's the name of the radio show you will be joining?

Dave and Candice are the morning show, so I'm actually on weeknights 7:00-11:00 p.m. and Sunday 7:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. The goal is for me to join Dave on the morning show by October, but we're kind of figuring everything out as we go.

What experiences from UNW did you draw from to land yourself with this opportunity?

UNW has helped me so much in so many ways already. Just the other day I was able to write up a press release for a drive-in movie event and I never would have known how to do that if it were for my PR classes. The next day I was working with Candice as she taught me how Life 102.5 uses music master and what their library looks like. Again, I would never have been able to keep up with it weren't for my radio classes and amazing opportunity I had to be the Music Director for the Remnant.FM last year. And I guess the third thing I was able to draw from at UNW is that radio is all about relationships. It's more about who you know than what you know. So networking and building relationships while I was still in college was really a huge factor when I was looking for a job after college.

What are your duties at the radio station?

What I do there is mostly being on air, and then right now we're a little short staffed so we all just sort of pitch in and help with whatever needs to be done. I was at an event the other day handling out popcorn and talking with listeners, I've been writing up press releases, scheduling music, and just learning everything I can!

What advice do you have for UNW students right now?

Some advice I would have is to learn all that you can while you are at UNW...Your professors are there to help you, and they want to see you succeed...never be afraid to reach out to them and ask questions when you don't understand. Take every opportunity you can to practice what you want to be! Spend hours in the studio to practice and to learn!

Congrats, Amanda, on your new job!
Nicole Koester ('10) is the new Senior Content Marketing Promotion Director at Integrity Records in Nashville Tennessee. Congrats, Nicole!
Vice President and Co-Host of Focus on the Family, John Fuller, and Singer-Songwriter-Author and Co-Founder of the Rabbit Room, Andrew Peterson, joined the Media Ministry class the first week.
Matt Pelishek ('05) has been named one of the top citizens of Bakersfield, CA. Matt is the program director of KAXL radio.
Note from The Chair
Overall, it has been a pretty rough six months, hasn’t it? The list of challenges is long and very real. We have run the gamut of emotions. For some, you (myself especially) may feel like you are entering the semester on “empty”.  Over the summer we prepared, changed things, prepared some more, changed and prepared some more. What does “hybrid” mean, again? I must confess there have been many times I have felt compelled to let loose a cartoon George Jetson primordial scream, “Jane, stop this crazy thing!”
But we are BACK! YES! Whether it’s face-to-face or in a variety of virtual learning options. It’s awesome to see you! And speaking on behalf of the Department of Communication faculty, we are thrilled to be underway with you. The positive energy in the classroom has been off the charts! Your return is helping to fill the tank.
While there’s been some struggles and certainly struggles ahead, scripture tells us to find joy, remember that God is sovereign and everything is happening right on schedule. Nothing thwarts the Lord (Job 42: 2).
As this semester begins, let the joy of the Lord be your strength (Nehemiah 8:10). We cannot do any of this by our own might, we need the spirit of the Lord (Zechariah 4:46). He is the great high priest who can sympathize with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15). Let us look to him because that is where our help comes from. Love the Lord God with all your heart, mind soul and strength and then bend that out towards others.  Out of that spirit, there are four words that I hope can instill a sense of purpose and urgency as we head into the new year - Pursue Christ. Pursue Craft.
Singer-songwriter Thad Cockrell released a song (along with the New Respects) this spring that’s been on my “turntable” (and playing on ) called “Fill My Cup”.  The chorus has been a prayer for me and may it be for you as well. The chorus sings:
Fill my cup, Lord
And run it over…
Give me love
Give me joy
Give me peace
Fill my cup, Lord
And run it over
I am your child in need
I am your child in need

May the Lord fill your cup!
Welcome back!
