I recently co-facilitated my 1st weekend retreat - it was a wonderful experience and learning opportunity for me. And it has made me think about healing (which is why many come to a retreat). What are the stages of healing? I dug out the Kubbler-Ross Model of the stages of grief and tried to superimpose this on how my thoughts on the healing process has unfolded:
1- Shock and Denial: Initial realization of our situation then denying or pretending nothing is wrong (feeling that nothing should be wrong), we may push down and ignore our own feelings, healing doesn’t happen much at this stage although we all go though it for shorter or longer periods of time.
2- Anger and Frustration: This is where blame comes in, whether at a particular person, the system, ourselves, God, the Universe, the world. The focus is fear based.
3- Bargaining: Looking in vain for a way out. Looking for someone else to tell us what to do. The magic pill. Wanting someone else to save our life or fix us. Focus is that the answer is outside of ourselves. Not trusting our own inner wisdom to guide us.
4- Depression: Realizing the inevitable. When nothing seems to work.
I believe that we can get stuck going back and forth in these four first stages and it isn’t until after we move through them that real healing and changes can begin. Awareness focused inward can help us move through these stages - what are we feeling in our body, what are the emotions, what thoughts and beliefs do we have running through our minds? Awareness and understanding of what is going on inside of us instead of outside of us is a step in taking responsibility for our own healing - and this is where our power lies. Then we can move on to the next stages:
5- Testing: Looking for real solutions from this new understanding of ourselves,. Finding processes, techniques, developing skills that work for us. Trusting ourselves.
6- Acceptance: Finding peace with what is (with love) and letting go of the suffering around it. We may even find a gift in the healing that we couldn’t have foreseen...
I know that at times, I step back into denial, anger, frustration, barganing or depression with my own healing, but through the practice of awareness I don’t find myself lingering there very long. And this allows me to heal the past, present and future.
It is work but so worth the effort!
Healing is an Art.
It takes Time.
It takes Practice.
It takes Love!
