I was talking to someone recently who wanted to change how angry they got around people, situations, the environment. They kept telling me “I just need to learn how to control my anger”.
I thought about that. Was this really the way to change? Whether we are feeling angry, annoyed, depressed, sad, overwhelmed and so on - these negative emotions can get in our way from living the life we want. When we are ready to address our feelings we tend to:
1- try to control it. By talking ourselves down, convincing ourselves we shouldn’t feel this way, judging ourselves. And this can work to some extent in the moment - but it inevitably will resurface again.
2- try to escape from it. By distracting ourselves with alcool, drugs, food, work, shopping, television or Netflix or anything else that lets us avoid the feeling. This helps us avoid the feeling in the moment but doesn’t change these feelings from coming back again.
3- try breathing exercises or other ways of calming your body down. Again, this will help in the moment but still doesn’t get to the root cause of our emotion.
But there is a another way.
We can try to understand it. Through awareness, by focussing on the inside. What am I feeling? Where do I feel it in by body? Do I notice images in my mind? Words? Self talk? Don’t judge yourself for feeling whatever you are feeling. Let yourself feel it. What do you have to believe in order to have these feelings? Question your beliefs. Meet your feelings with compassion - all those negative feelings come from a place of survival - they are really there to protect you from some misinterpreted threat.
You can try meridian tapping (see link How to Tap) to help release the feelings, the images, the physical sensations in your body. Tapping can also clear your mind so you can see from a different perpective. And as you deal with the root cause of your emotions, you change the way you respond to the triggers. So you can respond in a better way to those same situations in your life.

During these monthly drop-in sessions we will address how stress affects us and different techniques that can be used to let go of stress, change our thinking/beliefs about what is causing the stress and bring more clarity, grounding and health into our daily lives. Come out to share, connect, discuss and get a new perspective or new ideas on how to deal with the stress in your life.
Monthly drop in sessions will be held at the Carp Ridge Wellness Center every 2nd Thursday of the month (9:30am to 10:30am) and every last Wed of the month (7:00 to 8:00pm).
