I wanted to share an exercise that I can across last month - it is so simple yet has given me a new easy tool to use to immediately notice and shift my mood.
I was browsing through a second hand store when this little gem of a book caught my eye - I picked it up thinking I could use some of the worksheets at various workshops but when I got home I decided I needed to take the time to go through the whole book myself! I have been at it every day since the end of May! This book is called “The Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting PLAYBOOK With the 12 Tenets of Awakening” by Lynn Grabhorn.
The first step of the exercise is to make a list of all the negative feelings you can possibly think of (from big to little common ones like worry or annoyance). Try to list at least 25. Now do the same with positive feelings.
Now pick one negative feeling from your list and let yourself feel that negative feeling. Really get into it. Notice how your body feels - what it feels like in your body when you hold this negative emotion. Hold for about 15 seconds to take the time to observe what is going on in your body. Now, quickly pick a positive feeling from your list and get into it, make it as strong as you can. What does this positive emotion feel like in your body? Just notice, observe what happens in your body.
Now go back to another negative feeling and repeat the exercise going from negative to positive and being aware of what it feels like in your body. What did you experience. Could you feel a difference in your body between the two?
It will be different for everyone - for myself, I noticed that I could sense my body kind of closing in when feeling the negative emotions and my chest opening up when I thought about the positive ones.
During the next few days, instead of asking myself what I was thinking, feeling etc., I could simply check in with my body to see if it was “closed” or “open” and then take action if necessary. What I learned was that even when I thought everything was going well (normal state) during my day, I noticed that my body was actually tending to be in a “closed” state (most probably an automatic response to protect based on past programming) instead of “open” to the good feelings. It was subtle yet doing this changed the way I go through my day now. When I notice that my body is closed I simply let it get into that “open” feeling.
Try it out for yourself!
”As soon as you can truly identify the difference in frequency between a negative and a positive feeling, you can learn to flip from the low negative frequency to high, no matter what is happening around you”. Lynn Grabhorn
