- NEW! - Business Spotlight of the Month
Grand Opening of Paraquad's Health & Wellness Center on January 26, 2017
In this month's business spotlight, we profile Paraquad. Located at 5240 Oakland Avenue, Paraquad is a Center for Independent Living, that serves persons with disabilities and helps businesses learn more about serving persons with disabilities in the workplace.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your business.
Paraquad was founded in 1970 as a grassroots advocacy organization, 20 years before the Americans with Disabilities Act. The organization serves as a major Center for Independent Living for the St. Louis area. Centers for Independent Living are neither residential or medical. They strive to integrate persons with disabilities into society by providing support services, resources, and consulting.
Paraquad has five core focus areas: First, they serve as an information referral source for many of their clients. Second, Paraquad provides peer support. Because a minimum 51% of their staff must have a disability, clients are more likely to receive counseling and support from an individual who knows what it is like to have a disability. Third, Paraquad provides training on independent living skills. Fourth, Paraquad promotes advocacy, public policy, ad community organizing.Paraquat's fifth core focus area is assisting persons with disabilities with transitional independent living, especially for youth transitioning to adulthood. Assistance includes assessing the needs of clients, providing advice, as assisting with securing employment.
Q: What makes your business unique?
As an organization that was founded on grassroots advocacy, Paraquad blends advocacy and service to individuals. Additionally, the organization serves in a consulting role by helping businesses with training on disability services in employment and fostering an inclusive company culture.
Q: Are there any new projects that the organization is working on?
Paraquad just celebrated the grand opening of its new Health & Wellness Facility (see pictures above). Located behing their main building location on Oakland the new facility houses hand cycles, treadmills, and other accessible equipment. The goal with the expansion is to reach more people.
Paraquad is also working on a new venture to open up a Cafe on site that will provide employment for persons with disabilities. The Cafe will serve as a great way for the organization to interact with the community and help spread the word about the services that they offer.
Q: What are some of the benefits of being located in Forest Park South?
Paraquad is centrally located around transportation lines and around the service area, which is great for clients. The location next to the highway also provides a great opportunity for visibility. Tower Grove is a growing economic area, and it is exciting for Paraquad to be located here.
Q: What advice would you give new businesses in Forest Park South?
Remember to keep persons with disabilities in mind in all aspects of business.
For more information about the programs and services offered by Paraquad visit their website or contact Kevin Condon, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at firstname.lastname@example.org Special thanks to Mr. Kevin Condon for sitting down with us at Paraquad for an interview.
