Cystic Fibrosis Queensland Chair, Margaret Walker, and I were honoured to join with the States and Territories in the Cystic Fibrosis Federation to acknowledge the 2017 Patron’s Award recipients. This annual event, organised on behalf of the Federation by Cystic Fibrosis Australia, provides an opportunity for our national patron, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia to publicly acknowledge the Cystic Fibrosis Community Advocates, Volunteers, Researchers, Clinical Staff and Corporate partners who work tirelessly on behalf of all people living with cystic fibrosis and their families.

LJ Hooker Nerang was awarded Corporate Partner and represented by Principal Licensee, Shane Colquhoun and Braden Lamb. CFQ looks forward to working with LJ Hooker Nerang on 2018 projects such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Great Strides and The Rose Cup Charity Golf Day.

OUR SERVICES

CFSmart E-learning Modules for Teachers

CFSmart provides educators with the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of CF and its impact in the classroom through four modules that contain videos, images and text.

Each online learning module takes around 30 minutes - the first module ‘What is CF?’ is followed by either module 2, 3 or 4 depending on the child you teach/care for and their school level.

We encourage all our CF parents to not only review these modules but to also recommend them to your child’s educators and teachers.

Hospital Airway Clearance Equipment

In 2014, Cystic Fibrosis Queensland received a grant which allowed us to provide free respiratory equipment to CF people ineligible for MASS (medical aids subsidy scheme), through the CF Hospital Clinic Physiotherapists. This grant has now expired. CFQ will once again be applying for funding and, if approved, will be receiving the funds in June 2018.

We invite all CFQ Members, who are not covered by MASS, to apply directly to CFQ for the respiratory equipment referred by your physiotherapist.  If stock is available we can fulfil the request. Complete your Hospital’s Referral Form with your physiotherapist.

Collaborative Funding of Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust Innovation Grants

Late in 2016 the Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust (ACFRT), on behalf of CF organisations in Australia, partnered with the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) to review and administer the ACFRT’s inaugural Innovation Grants.

More than a dozen applications were received and following an extensive and rigorous review process that involved cystic fibrosis (CF) clinicians and researchers plus a panel of consumers, three outstanding Innovation Grants were identified.

Jay Horvat, Phil Hansbro and Peter Wark were awarded the 2017 Innovation Grant for their proposal to investigate the role and therapeutic targeting of iron in CF, leading to potential improvement in the clearance of Pseudomonas lung infection. $80,000 was awarded to this team.

Shafagh Waters, Adam Jaffe, Kebin Morris, Keith Ooi and Hardip Patel were in second place with their proposal to investigate RNA therapeutics using personalised organoids. By suppressing the lncRNA BGas in cultured mini-guts (organoids) they hope to increase CFTR protein presence at the epithelial cell surface regardless of the CFTR mutation. They will establish drug delivery techniques that can be adopted to effectively translate BGas- suppressing compounds into a novel CF therapy. This project will be funded by Cystic Fibrosis Research Limited in Queensland (CFRL). $70,000 was awarded to this team.

The ACFRT Innovation Grants are a way for all the States and Territories in the CF Federation to get behind and support leading research which will benefit all Australians living with CF. We encourage all CF researchers to apply for such grants direct to ACFRT.

GRANTS

CFQ has been successfully awarded grants targeted at supporting families.
The Queensland Mental Health Commission, in partnership with The Queensland Alliance for Mental Health, provided a grant to CFQ to fund a “Caring for Carers” dinner event as part of Queensland “Mental Health Week” in October. It is important for parents and other carers to understand the stress and impact on mental health that come with their roles of caring for loved ones. Carers Queensland joined the event to present tips how to stay healthy despite the unique challenges that face carers.
The Inger Rice Foundation has generously provided $2400 to help support newly diagnosed families. It is crucial for parents to receive helpful information about CF at this time, and to be reminded they are not alone, and that organisations such as CFQ are there to assist. CFQ is grateful to the Foundation for their support.

Are you a CFQ member living in the eastern suburbs of Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan or Beaudesert?

Thanks to the Easts Leagues Foundation Grant and the Commonwealth Bank Community Grant, CFQ can reimburse you $500 towards the purchase of a portable nebuliser.

Deliver joy this christmas to Queenslanders living with
cystic fibrosis

Christmas is a time for friends and family. Cystic Fibrosis is an indiscriminate disease and people living with this chronic illness do not necessarily receive a break over the festive season. Some of our Cystic Fibrosis Queensland members will be spending this time in hospital.

Help us bring Christmas to our CFQ members by placing a gift under our CFQ Christmas Giving Tree or by making a donation towards the purchasing of gifts. Let our CFQ members, who are spending Christmas in hospital, know that you are thinking of them over the festive season.

Your gift can be for a CF child, teenager or adult. Please wrap your gift in festive paper and label your gift to ensure its recipient is both age and gender appropriate.

The Cystic Fibrosis Queensland Christmas Giving Tree is located at the Cystic Fibrosis Queensland Bookshop, Ryans Road, Nundah.  You can also deliver gifts to our Toowong Office, Sylvan Road and at our Community Fundraiser Giving Tree located at Manly Pool, 42 Fairlead Cres, Manly.

Your gifts will be delivered to The Prince Charles Hospital, Mater Young Adults Health Centre, Gold Coast University Hospital and The Lady Cilento Childrens Hospital by our Services team across December.

Everybody will be happy and you have also helped make short lives BIG by shopping at the CFQ Bookshop.

Invite Rosie to your family gathering this Christmas. This lovely rag doll brightens everyone’s day! All proceeds from the sale of Rosie goes directly towards CFQ members support services.
Christmas Trading Hours

The CFQ Bookshop will be trading up until close of business Sunday 24 December 2017 and will be re-opening Monday 2 January, 2018
The 65 Roses Gala Ball launched our exciting new Cystic Fibrosis Queensland fundraising project. We are bouncing into action early 2018 taking trampolines into Brisbane schools!

Trampolining is not only a physiotherapeutic tool for those living with cystic fibrosis but is a great holistic health giver, bringing both physical and mental benefits for those who jump. We estimate that over a period of three years the program will have the potential to touch the lives of over 300 000 thousand schoolchildren.

Provide a strong fundraising stream for Cystic Fibrosis Queensland members.
If your child’s school would like to participate or you know of a potential sponsor for this amazing initiative please contact Roz Fenson phone 07 3359 8000 or email rozf@cfqld.org.au
