Novel research, innovative technology solutions, and silo-breaking collaborations are changing the way we provoke change within each stage of our food systems.


How do we catalyze this work? AFI has two initiatives that aim to make this possible: the Arrell Global Food Innovation Awards and the Arrell Scholars program. Both are now accepting submissions. If you know of an innovative researcher, a bold community focused organization or a student committed to building a better food system, encourage them to take advantage of these opportunities.

Global Excellence in Food Innovation and Community Impact
Nominations are now open for the $100,000 CAD Arrell Global Food Innovation Awards

Arrell Food Institute recognizes global leaders who are ensuring future food security for the planet, and hopes to inspire new leaders to take bold steps towards change. Scientific excellence and community engagement are necessary to overcome the challenges our world will face in feeding 9 billion people and beyond. A prize of $100,000 CAD is available in each category.

The International Year of Plant Health
Research aims to offer solutions to crop challenges around the world.

The United Nations has declared 2020 the year of plant health to draw attention to the vital role plant life plays in food security as well as environmental and economic sustainability.

Professor Manish Raizada, from the university's Department of Plant Agriculture, told CBC he applauds the announcement because of the attention it brings to those struggling to grow food amid the challenges of climate change.
Who we're following 

Katya Kudashkina is one of the first Arrell Scholars and is launching an exciting project related to her research. LINK Project is a new interdisciplinary program that seeks to apply machine learning techniques to research in agri-food. The project is to support critical issues around human health and a sustainable food supply
