In Focus

The People’s Portfolio welcomes you to our quarterly newsletter. We are reminded this season that the universal values of human dignity and inclusion are more vital than ever.

The People’s Portfolio partners with non-profits to create compelling visual advocacy—photographs and digital storytelling—that frames human rights and humanitarian issues to propel those organizations’ work. We disseminate these “portfolios” to the widest possible audience through our partnerships with high-profile media and multi-media platforms.

The People’s Portfolio emerged as a result of projects undertaken by acclaimed photographer Platon to address the malaria crisis (with the UN Foundation) and human rights abuses in Burma, Egypt and Russia (with Human Rights Watch). These portfolios have been seen by millions – and have helped shape public attitudes and influence policy debates at critical moments.

Human Rights Advocates as Heroes

Working with the Center for Civil and Human Rights, The People’s Portfolio created eight life-sized portraits of advocates under threat and a 40-foot mural of defenders around the world (image above) for the Center’s permanent human rights exhibit.

Immigration in the United States

Platon and Human Rights Watch tackled the crisis of families torn apart by unjust US immigration policies. Our portfolio told the human story about the effects of provisions debated by Congress. Time magazine published the portfolio.

Sexual Violence and Mining in the Congo

This year, The People’s Portfolio completed a ten-day mission to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to document the scourge of sexual violence against women and the need for accountability for such crimes. Our partners included Physicians for Human Rights and Panzi Hospital and Foundations. This project will be featured in a Netflix documentary to be aired in February 2017.

Help The People's Portfolio reach its goal of $260,000 in 2017 with a tax-deductible contribution this Giving Tuesday. Your gift will support the creation of an iconic five-chapter coffee table book entitled “The Defenders” that will showcase the global human rights movement and become the manifesto for our foundation.
