Dear Friends,

Now more than ever, The People’s Portfolio is committed to giving emerging human rights defenders a platform from which to be heard. Dr. Denis Mukwege is one such leader, a recipient of the prestigious Sakharov Prize for his advocacy to end sexual violence and for his outstanding services helping survivors of rape rebuild their lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Thanks to your generous contributions in 2016, The People’s Portfolio was able to document the important work of Dr. Mukwege and his team at Panzi Hospital. Here are some of the ways your support has enabled us to draw attention to the network of individuals leading the fight for justice and accountability in the Congo:

Netflix Documentary Premiere
On February 10, Netflix premiered “Abstract: The Art of Design,” executive produced by Platon’s long-time collaborator, Scott Dadich (co-CEO and founder of Godfrey Dadich Partners and former editor-in-chief of WIRED). Platon’s life and career -- including his artistic practice and aesthetic ideals -- are explored in this eight-episode documentary series profiling the world's leading influencers and communicators.

Netflix travelled with Platon and The People’s Portfolio to the Congo to help capture the incredible work of Dr. Mukwege and to meet some of the men, women and children of Panzi Hospital. It is a privilege for us to share their courage and resilience with the world.

A clip from the documentary can be seen here.
Our Congo Portfolio in TIME
We are thrilled to have partnered with TIME Magazine to share Dr. Mukwege's powerful vision and leadership, and to spotlight the devastating effects of rape used as a weapon of war. Platon: Portraits of Sexual Assault Survivors in Congo can be seen here.
Platon in Davos
In January, Platon and 40 other cultural leaders participated in the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting held in Davos, Switzerland, to speak truth to power and inspire more responsive and responsible leadership.

Platon's presentation, entitled “The Invisible Conflict,” highlights the strength of those whose lives are intertwined with the conflict mineral trade in the Congo. The event was moderated by Kenneth Roth, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, and due to popular demand, Platon was asked to deliver this talk twice.

The presentation can be seen here.
Testimonials from our NGO Partners
In telling stories of sexualized violence in particular, sensitivity is essential. Platon and The People’s Portfolio embrace the challenges and the humanity, enabling us to communicate the power of holistic healing, family and community reintegration. With media partners, we will do more than break the silence and stigma surrounding sexualized violence. We will forge an authentic, solutions-focused path to peace. - Elizabeth Blackney, Media & Communications Director, Panzi Hospital and Foundations
Platon’s work empowers survivors of human rights abuses to tell their stories and adds a poignant and inspiring visual dimension to our advocacy efforts. We at Physicians for Human Rights are proud to partner with The People’s Portfolio to document the incredible network of doctors, nurses, police officers, lawyers, and judges who are combatting sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Platon is elevating their work and making sure the essential stories of these frontline human rights defenders are heard around the world. - Donna McKay, Executive Director, Physicians for Human Rights
From all of us at The People’s Portfolio, thank you for your continued support.
