ACTS OF THE AUGUSTANS

an account of the ministry and mission
of the Augusta District UMC

A Word from the Mission Specialist

Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, begins today at sundown. It’s a reminder from our Jewish brothers and sisters that amid the vindictive, ruthless, punishing gods of ancient humanity, the one true God reveals God’s self to be all about mercy, “slow to anger and full of forgiveness,” as the psalmist sings.

Saying “I love you” and “I’m sorry” to ones we cherish is the most profoundly moving thing we can do to deepen those relationships.  The Jewish recognition of Yom Kippur reminds us of how powerful it is that God loves us and craves our love in return.  God is eager to forgive us when we seek forgiveness, and God wants us to forgive one another.  At the core of the Day of Atonement is the recognition that every one of us is a sinner and that God calls each of us to change through the action of forgiveness and redemption.

Our mission as Christians and United Methodists is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  It’s incredibly daunting to contemplate transforming the world so ensnared by the evil of hatred and death.  When people seem poised to assume the worst motives in others, our faith in God offers the counter-cultural opportunity for self-examination of our own motives and expressing contrition when they are wrong.  In our society where avoiding blame, denying guilt and accusing others rather than accepting responsibility is rampant, we offer the witness of a community admitting sin and asking forgiveness.

Hear this call to self-examination and forgiveness this Day of Atonement: No matter where you have been or where you have failed to be.  No matter what you have said or what you have failed to say.  No matter what you have done or what you have failed to do.  No matter who you have loved or who you have failed to love.  God knows you completely and loves you so very deeply.  God promises to meet you now just as you are, to forgive you, and in love, to send you forward into who God is calling you to become.

Peace be upon us this Yom Kippur and always. May the circle of forgiveness be drawn ever more widely until the whole world is transformed by God’s grace.

The best is yet to come!  Call me…let’s welcome it together!

Attending this workshop will give you some Discipline-approved options for restructuring your committees into a single board and help you re-imagine how your church can focus more on fulfilling its mission and less on running meetings.

The event will be Monday, November 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sandy Springs UMC. Dinner is optional and will begin at 5 pm.
