Welcome and Congratulations to our new
Theatre and Dance Department Chair!
We are very excited to announce that Professor Darryl V. Jones has been appointed as Chair of the Theatre and Dance Department for the academic years of 2017- 2020! We want to thank Professor Jones for his consistent leadership! He has played a very important role in our department since joining in 2005. Professor Jones has served as an instructor for our acting and singing classes, as well as serving as director and choreographer to many dazzling plays and musicals such as “Our Town” and “Cabaret.” We are full of joy and gratitude for having him for many more years to come. Professor Jones is eager to take on this very important role and to continue to make our program as dynamic as ever.

Summer Plans for Our Students

Mariah Kuhn will be working this summer at a  Young Audiences Performance and Education Apprenticeship!  for Bay Area Children’s Theatre (BACT).

It is a full-time paid apprenticeship from June to August 2017. As part of the apprenticeship, she will be understudying various roles in “Rainbow Fish: The Musical”. Mariah will be the assistant director for "Schoolhouse Rock"! and will also get to know local Bay Area professional artists like Nina Meehan who is the executive artistic director of BACT! Mariah will also assist with anything that is needed to keep BACT a well-oiled machine!

Kylara Pankow is spending her summer at Livermore Shakespeare Festival! Her apprenticeship will entail many roles. Kylara will be working as box office staff, and front of house manager! 

Kylara’s other duties will be serving as dramaturg and assistant to the director for “Cyrano de Bergerac.” Pankow will also serve as understudy for 2 actors in “Cyrano de Bergerac” as well as serve as understudy for the characters of: Snout, Cobweb and Mustardseed in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

April Ballesteros is the Artistic Learning Intern for California Shakespeare Theater July 2017! April will be assisting the director for “Comedy of Errors”, at the Oakland School for the Arts for the four-week summer Conservatory Camp.

Grace Ortega accepted a Stage Management internship at California Shakespeare Theater in Berkeley, California for summer 2017. She will also be working on their production of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie.

Jossue Gallardo accepted an internship and is working with the Santa Fe Opera in Santa Fe, New Mexico for summer 2017.

Gabrielle Upshur, from Hayward, California, is a senior Theatre and Dance Major at CSUEB with a concentration in Technical Theatre.  Upshur has accepted an internship in Hair and MakeUp at Santa Rosa Junior College from May until August, summer 2017. Gabrielle is learning how to ventilate wigs, wig maintenance as well as techniques in stage make-up. Upshur will also use her new techniques working on the Summer Season of productions at SRJC on the play’s Chicago, Raisin In the Sun and Clybourne Park. Gabrielle’s past work at CSUEB includes: Audio Technician for Cymbeline and Sound Design for Cabaret. Upshur looks forward to returning for the 2017/2018 school year at CSUEB where she will be working as Sound Designer for CSU Ferguson in the fall quarter and as Wig and MakeUp Designer for She Loves Me in winter quarter.

Jerardo Larios recently graduated in June 2017 from CSU East Bay with an option in Acting. Jerardo was last seen performing in CSUEB’s production of “Cabaret” as Ernst. His last quarter here at CSUEB has been a very exciting and eventful one. On top of graduating with his BA in Theatre, he was recently selected to speak on behalf of the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences during the June 10th commencement ceremony. Larios was also accepted to the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville Professional Training Company’s 2017-2018 season which he is incredibly excited to start in July. Jerardo is humbled and thankful to have had such great professors and fellow students to make his journey here at East Bay a memorable and overwhelmingly successful one.

Alumna, Belgica Rodriguez (‘13) has had  a very fun and rewarding year so far! She is currently one of our Instructional Support Assistants at the Theatre and Dance Office. She is thrilled to be a part of our department and help our students get as many opportunities as possible! In February, Belgica collaborated with current students, staff, and alumni to bring the 2017 Vagina Monologues to CSUEB, which she directed. Belgica is also a part-time seamstress in our department's costume shop and sometimes even designs costumes!  Belgica’s future is looking bright as this spring she signed with Marla Dell Talent Agency for their Fit Modeling, Commercial, Print and On Camera division! In the past nine months, Belgica has modeled and acted in local commercials for BrainTree, Square, CreditKarma, SunRun Solar and more! In April, Belgica was seen on stage at ZSpace Below for a staged reading of “Sucia” by Nicole Jost. You can see Belgica on stage next, at Piano Fight for FINALS of Short Lived VI, in “Small Batch Baby” by Jonathon Luskin (August 3-5th), where she will compete for $5,000! Marie Alexandra Ibarra (‘15) will be pursuing a Master's degree in the Higher, Adult, & Lifelong Education program for Student Affairs Administration in the fall. From The Bay to Japan, East Bay's "Wonder Woman" is ready to take on a new adventure at Michigan State University!

Featured Faculty

Our Costume Design Faculty, Ulises Alcala, recently worked at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, in Ashland, Oregon for winter/spring 2017. Alcala designed costumes for the newest production of The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare and directed by CSUEB alumna, Dawn Monique Williams. The production opened in June 2017 and runs till October 13, 2017.
