Thank You, Ward 8!
Thank you to the residents of Ward 8 who put their faith in me to serve as our next Ward 8 member on the DC State Board of Education. We take office on January 2, 2017 and I am working hard in the meantime to prepare for the important work that will improve outcomes, support families, and #closethegap for students east of the Anacostia River and across the District of Columbia. I'm proud to share the first of many updates with you and I am excited to get to work on your behalf on the State Board of Education.

Happy Holidays & Thank You,
Markus Batchelor

Representing Our Voice During the Chancellor Selection
On Tuesday, the DC Council confirmed Mayor Bowser's nomination of Oakland Unified School District Superintendent Antwan Wilson as the next Chancellor of DC Public Schools. From the day the nomination was made to the Council's vote, I have worked to ensure that Ward 8 residents had a seat at the table and that our voices were represented during this important conversation.

Ward 8 parents and education stakeholders testified at the Council's Committee on Education Public Roundtable on the Nomination at Dorothy Height Library in Ward 7 on December 5th. In addition, many stakeholders were able to join Deputy Mayors Snowden and Niles at a meet and greet with Mr. Wilson on December 6th at the Mayor's Shannon Place Office in Anacostia.

Ward 8 also showed up during the December 8th Confirmation Hearing, where I urged the Council to ensure the selection process was open and transparent and that Mr. Wilson will be hyper-focused on the issues that matter to Ward 8 children and families. Please read my full testimony.

I look forward to working with Chancellor Wilson to find ways to close the achivement gap, improve outcomes, and secure the resources students, teachers and parents need to be successful.

Hitting the Ground Running at the SBOE

Since the election, I've been hard at work to make sure I am prepared to join the important policy discussions on the State Board of Education.

I have met with several of my future colleagues and SBOE staff to talk about the work that will continue into the new year, including a focus on local implementation of President Obama's Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a renewed focus on reforming graduation requirements, and making the board's operations more efficient, including updated by-laws and a policy and operations manual.

On November 6th, I joined some of my future colleagues at a regional meeting of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE).

The new members are listed below:

David Grosso (I - At-Large), Chairman
Charles Allen (D - Ward 6)
Anita Bonds (D - At-Large)

I look forward to working with committee members, especially during the upcoming budget season, to get the resources our students and families in Ward 8 need to be successful.
