A big-hearted small church nestled in the mountains of Ivy, Virginia

September 23, 2018

Dear People of St. John the Baptist,

This is a difficult letter to write.  After much prayer, discernment, and consultation with my husband and Bishop Susan Goff, I have decided to resign as your vicar.  I did not anticipate leaving so soon, but I believe God is now calling us to divergent paths, just as God called us together two years ago.

I have deeply appreciated the opportunity to get to know each of you.  We have shared important milestones in our time together--the loss of some beloved church members; the calling of our organist, Carlton; new partnerships with Albemarle County schools on outreach projects; new participants in our Sunday worship--and we have continued cherished traditions, including the church yard sales and Christmas Bazaar, Vacation Bible School, Homecoming, and fellowship meals.  St. John’s is enriched by your faithful service and work in Jesus’ name.

Let us enjoy the time we have left together.  My final Sunday will be October 21. If you have questions for me, or if it would be helpful to talk, I am happy to do so.  The diocesan staff will be working with the vestry in the coming weeks, and I am confident that together you will find the next  priest who possesses the gifts to meet your needs.

Finally, please know how grateful I am to you for inviting me to serve as your vicar.  You all will continue to be in my prayers.

In God’s love,

Emily +
