Walk4Liberty

Jeffersonians are invited to support and participate in Walk4Liberty, a protest walk on Highway 49, traveling through 11 counties. The walk begins on August 13 and ends on August 25. A few walkers will be walking the entire 300 miles with letters and calls going out to Sheriffs and county elected officials, challenging them to walk for one mile in their shoes.

This protest walk is coordinated by farmers, ranchers, hikers, hunters, small-scale miners, campers, loggers, off-roaders and fishermen who are fed up. Or, simply put, they say California is ignoring federal laws concerning fundamental rights of access, the right to mine minerals on federal mining claims and the right to use public lands as they were intended. Additionally, they say they are fed up with local businesses being forced to close in a state with the highest taxes in America, the loss of dreams of sending their children to college and the slow and steady

decline of our rural communities because of regulatory nightmares.

The walk will travel through the counties of Plumas, Sierra, Yuba, Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera. They are reaching out to all rural citizens to line up on Highway 49, with signs and flags. On Tuesday, August 27, the protest will culminate at the State Capitol at 1 pm, where they ask all from the 23 Jefferson counties to show up with a loud, clear and peaceful voice to tell the politicians who represent us that they are tired of being ignored and seeing their rural communities destroyed by failed ideology.

Second Annual Business Showcase

Friday, August 16, is the date for the 2nd Annual, El Dorado County, State of Jefferson Business Showcase at the Forni Building located at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds from 3 to 8 pm. At least 26 local businesses will be displaying their goods and services. This year, food includes a special Jefferson Hot Dog Bar as well as food and beverages from local restaurants. There will also be a wine, beer and Margarita bar.

There are games for both adults and children along with indoor and outdoor activities. You can also purchase desserts by the piece, half or whole, donated by local bakery owners and SOJ supporters. There will also be specialty, professional baked goods that will be auctioned off. There are prizes galore offered for not only silent and live auction bidders, but also for lucky winners who play the Balloon Pop and Heads

or Tails games. This is all possible thanks to the growing number of El Dorado County business owners who support Jefferson along with El Dorado County Jefferson supporters.

Some of the prizes for lucky bidders include a 4-day, 3 night vacation at one of the many locations of Worldmark, a $750 value; a round of golf for 4 at beautiful Apple Mountain Golf Resort; a Berkeley 4' self priming PTO pump, valued at $2,600, to name just a few. There will also be a special prize to bid on.

As you drive south on I-5 in Northern Jefferson, you will come to Colusa County. In 2010, the population was 21.419 and the county seat is Colusa. Created in 1850, it was one of the original counties of California named after the 1844 Rancho Colus Mexican land grant to John Bidwell. In the state legislative act of 1850, it was spelled Colusi, and newspapers would print it as Coluse at times. By 1855, the name officially became Colusa.

The county was home to the Patwin band of the Wintun people. The area included parts along the Sacramento River and also lands extending towards Lake County. Colusa has a land area of 1,156 square miles with 5.6 square miles being water which includes Elk Creek, Salt Creek, Stony Creek and Bear Creek. The Sacramento River forms the boundary of the eastern side.

The City of Williams, named after William H. Williams, is right on I-5. In 1850, Williams knew that the railroad would be heading his way. With that in mind and the future growth of the area, he began selling parcels of land ten miles west of the county seat.

The city of Williams was first known as Central and founded in 1874. Later in 1876, it was renamed Williams to honor William H. Williams.

Agriculture is a large part of Williams producing rice, almonds, walnuts, vine and seed crops, alfalfa, grain, bees and cattle.

Recreation is a big draw to Williams. Boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, horseback riding and hunting lures visitors from around the country. Deer, elk, wild boar, pheasant, turkey, quail, duck, geese and dove provide almost year round hunting. With the Sacramento River just 10 miles east, a variety of fish are just waiting to be caught consisting of salmon, stiper, steelhead, sturgeon and not to forget the catfish.

The Williams Fire Department has a history of being a volunteer fire department since 1906. It has one staffed firefighter that is there 24/7, with 40+ trained volunteers and a duty officer.

So come to Colusa where history and present day meet on the corner of I-5 and State Route 20.
