Around the farm...

Hugelkultur: Raised beds in the hoophouse.
Calendula: Still flowering outside our door.
Hu-what? Hugelkultur is German for hill culture or hill mound. To construct our hugels, we put down a layer of prunings from our apple trees followed by a hefty layer of year-old bedding (hay and manure) and topped it off with a layer of soil that had been scraped off one of our concrete pads as we were cleaning up the farm this summer. The branches and bedding slowly breakdown to create a fantastically fertile and mineral rich raised bed. We've got comfrey and Jerusalem artichoke nestled in our newly constructed hugel. This will give these roots and tubers a chance to mature before they get moved out to the fields next spring. With any luck, we'll be planting some lettuces in the hugels for a late winter/early spring harvest- followed by tomatoes and melons this summer.

Despite the rain and cloudy weather, the calendula plants outside our back door and in the garden are still thriving. We've collected two harvests since the first frost. We dry the flowers and use them to infuse oils for the lotions and salves that we'll make over the winter.

In other news: the garlic is finally in the ground, we've added two more calves to the herd (another bull and heifer calf, cows and calves are all well), and we got our NRCS (Natural Resource and Conservation Service) conservation plan back- which means we'll be able to move forward on installing a watering system for our critters next year.

As the nights grow longer and the thermometer continues to dip, this can be a challenging time of year for many of us. We are grateful for the help and support we've received in our first season on the farm and look forward to the coming season. There is much to celebrate!

May all beings be peaceful.
May all beings be happy.
May all beings be well.
May all beings be safe.
May all beings be free.

May the magic of this season bring you much joy!
Best,
Gretchen & Will
