FROM YOUR HEAD TEACHER

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you all had a relaxing half term holiday.
Year 8 Assessment Week has gone well with many pupils working hard to reach their potential and Year 7 have been working hard to make improvements on their assessments, reflecting our Growth Mindset; we can always strive to make improvements.

On Wednesday, Mr Deveson launched our Flight Path model with Year 7 pupils in a special assembly. Our assessment and reporting system is, of course, being developed and adapted in accordance with national changes. However, we feel the system is robust in its nature, reflecting the concept of Growth Mindset, and that progress is ongoing and not always linear. Our GPA (grade point average) approach will hopefully give a more accurate picture of progress across a year.

We hosted a visit from educational consultant Penny Sharratt this week. She spent time observing the routines of the day, observed lessons and interviewed a range of pupils about their perceptions of behaviour. The feedback we received was extremely useful.

Although the vast majority of TKA pupils conduct themselves with integrity, politeness and respect, we still find ourselves being challenged by those who are not yet invested in the vision of our school. And it is that challenge that we continue to analyse and as a result refine our practice.

Enjoy the weekend

Sophie Cavanagh.

CLAPA assembly

On Monday, the charity CLAPA (Cleft Lip and Palate Association) visited assembly to inform the pupils about the work they do in the Kingston and Surbiton area. Mike Hey, head of Fundraising, spoke about the condition and informed us that three babies are born with a cleft lip and/or palate every day in the UK.

This charity provides services for families who are affected by the condition as well as volunteer training for parent and peers. We hope School Council will work with the charity in the future.

SPOTLIGHT on STEM

As a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) school we have excellent links with Kingston University and Kingston College. As part of Kingston University Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme, 3rd year Chemistry undergraduate, Zahurah, has been working with us on a 10 week placement to develop her understanding of STEM teaching.

She has had hands on experience of Science teaching and has also conducted research on the perception of STEM careers with girls.

In the light of the national shortage of Science teachers, we are delighted to have hosted Zahurah and hope this scheme will develop more links with our trust partners and ensure TKA adheres to the highest possible standards in science teaching.
TENNIS TABLE VICTORY!

On Tuesday the TKA table tennis team visited Canbury Park to play in a tournament, accompanied by Ms Briggs. The team was: Frank, Rhys, Leo, Alistair, Archie and Jean Alain (not pictured)

The games were best of 3 and Frank won his matches 11-3, and 11-9. Rhys won 11-4, 11-2. Archie won his matches 11-3 and 11-3. Rhys also played in doubles with Frank and they won. Archie played doubles with Leo and won 11-8. Archie even had to play the table tennis coach! He put up a good fight but lost by only 3 points.

TKA ended up winning the tournament by 62 points.

Rhys said afterwards, "I like playing table tennis because it's fun, sporty and gets you moving."

Archie said, "I've been playing table tennis since I was 4 so to then have 4 tables at TKA is a privilege!"

Police Cadets

Kingston Police are starting an after school club at Kingston Academy.

We would be looking to recruit current year 7 and 8 on Thursday’s and this would be directly after school until 1630. The programme will include various police related lessons and activities, learning how things work and how to spot a crime - all the while building positive relationships with the police. This would be combined with games and initiative exercises. It would run for 3/4 hour and the cost is just £1 per week, which only goes back into our activities.

The programme will be led by police officers and cadet leaders who have been coached and trained in mentoring and leadership. It involves the children working together to learn about police officers and how they can help us and will provide an insight into the different areas, skills and specialist groups within the service.

Junior Cadets will begin on Thursday 20th April, after the Easter break (subject to sufficient interest) If you would like to know more, discuss with the school. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you and kind regards
