FROM YOUR HEAD TEACHER

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we are delighted to announce TKA is an oversubscribed school! Year 6 pupils received confirmation of their place in September 2017 and we are looking forward to welcoming parents to a meeting at the school next Tuesday. The transition process will start with meetings in the summer term and we look forward to meeting our new cohort.

Another highlight of the week was World Book Day. All pupils and staff enjoyed dressing up and celebrating our love of books. I saw some amazingly creative costumes and House points will be awarded next week. You can see many of these costumes on our Twitter feed @TheKingstonAca. We are a school that recognises the importance of reading to aid progress and attainment but we also just love reading for pleasure. Do have a look at the Reading Challenge lists on the website if you require guidance on recommended books for your child.

As part of our STEM strategy, the RAF Roadshow on Thursday was also an excellent showcase of technology where pupils had the opportunity to see a drone in action and demonstrations of engines. Many of our pupils said their perception of engineering had changed as a result of the show and we hope we are convincing them of the benefits of pursuing a career in STEM.

Have a good weekend

Sophie Cavanagh.

WORLD BOOK DAY

On Thursday staff and pupils celebrated World Book Day by dressing as their favourite book characters. We had some wonderful costumes ranging from Dr Seuss, Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes, Billionaire Boy, The Wind in the Willows, Pooh Bear and Harry Potter. The creativity was impressive!

All pupils received a £1 book voucher which can be exchanged at book shops for the World Book Day publications - more details can be found here: www.worldbookday.com/
ARTS AWARD

Mrs Linch was very pleased to welcome a moderator from Trinity College London to TKA this Wednesday. The moderator enjoyed looking through example portfolios of the History Makers, viewing photographs of the fabulous end of year exhibition at Kingston College and meeting a pupil panel.

The creative projects that went towards the award, included Portraiture, Still Life, Landscape and Art Club activities. All 117 pupils that were entered have passed and will receive their certificates in due course. The Arts Award Explore is an Entry Level 3 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework.

"Because I am really enthusiastic about Art, Mrs Linch asked me to meet with the Arts Award Moderator. There were 12 of us. It was very good to get to recap on what we did in Art over the years and to see what other pupils liked and what we had in common. The Arts Award was based on the Art, as History Makers, that we had done in Year 7. I was very pleased to hear that me and everyone now in Year 8 has been awarded the Arts Award certificate."

RAF Education Roadshow

On Thursday morning both year groups watched an RAF Education Roadshow where pupils watched a drone in action and learnt about the four forces of flight through demonstrations and lecturing. The RAF rely on drone technology and showed pupils some drones can fly at 250 miles per hour and travel enormous distances. There was even footage of an RAF trained golden eagle attacking an illegal drone.

"I liked how they gave examples of the flight ideas so we could see things in action" said Simrat.

Jenna added "The people presenting were enthusiastic!"

"I like how they brought in the engines so we could see. Seeing the roadshow changed my perspective about what engineering is" said Angelina.
Collaboration with Fern Hill Primary

We are currently developing excellent links with one of our feeder school, Fern Hill Primary. Pictured above are Mrs Nalik, the school's English co-ordinator, with Ms Cruz from TKA. They discussed ways in which the schools can liaise and work with each other and observe each other's lessons.

Ms Criz said, "We are lucky to have Fern Hill right on our doorstep which will mean we'll learn a great deal about how to improve the transition between Year 6 and year 7."
FRIENDS of TKA Lottery

Thank you for those of you who continue to support the Friends of TKA lottery, and to those of you who so kindly donate your winnings back to us.  So far we have raised over £1000 as a result of your ongoing support, but let’s see if we can improve on this!  Tickets are just £1 per week and every entrant has the chance of winning our lottery draw every Saturday.  This term all tickets entered for the draw on 15 April 2017 will also be in with the chance of winning a 12 month family membership to the National Trust!

Good luck!
A Midsummer Night's Dream

Here is another sneak preview of rehearsals of the school production, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' The scene shows Layan as a 'sofa dweller' who freeze frames the play at important moments to explain the plot. Here she is showing the complex dynamics between Helena, Demetrius and Lysander.

Director Mr Allport has also added an extra rehearsal on Saturday 11th March so he can have a whole cast run thtough. Those involved will be receiving an email asking for consent.

Tickets for the play are available on Parent Portal.
David Shrigley art project

TKA pupils will have seen a series of sketches by the artist David Shriglety appear around school. See if you can spot all the art work before it disappears!

This is part of an art project where pupils will be creating their own sketches that convey a positive message using people or animals.
