FROM YOUR HEAD TEACHER

Dear Parents and Carers,

A very happy new year to all TKA families. I hope you have enjoyed a relaxing festive holiday. Year 7 made an excellent start to their time at TKA and I wish them every success for another action packed and productive Spring term.

This edition of TKA Times is a relaunched format which we hope will be more accessible and present TKA as it deserves to be - polished, professional and proud of our community's achievements.

This term we look forward to another busy time when pupils continue to work hard towards their second set of assessments in February and only our second ever school production. At leadership level we will be picking up on threads from last term relating to the parent surveys. There are a number of Year 8 parents who have yet to respond. I appreciate that you all have very busy lives but it is crucial to us that we receive your feedback. Please do therefore complete the survey via the link below.

Two key threads we are following up on relate to strengthening home-school communication and ensuring all pupils are being challenged in all aspects of their learning. Recent assessments show pupils are making secure progress across the curriculum but we are determined to interrogate this further in response to parent view.

We will once again be inviting parents in to attend our monthly drop-in surgeries where parents are able to meet and talk with members of the Leadership Team about any observations you have about the school or ideas you wish us to consider. The next drop-in will be on Monday 23rd January at 3pm. It is always tricky to get the timing right on such sessions and we will try and spread these around so more parents an attend.

Finally, thank you for all the messages of support sent in relating to my message regarding, what local Headteachers jointly feel is, the pending crisis in education funding. We are in the process of joining forces with other local schools parent bodies through the distribution of a petition. More information will follow on this in the next few weeks.

Regards,

Sophie Cavanagh
Head Teacher

Parent E-safety talk

On Wednesday evening, Peter Cowling from Achieving for Children, delivered an informative parent talk on e-safety.  He was full of practical advice on how to keep your children safe in the digital world and still remain within their 'circle of trust'.

Tennis Coaching with Judy Murray at the Lawn Tennis Association

On the 5th of January, 17 girls from year 7 and 8 went to the London Tennis Association to learn some different tennis skills and to meet Judy Murray to help film for a new organisation (She Rallies) that will encourage more girls to take up tennis as a sport. It will also show teachers how to teach tennis in small spaces. We took part in different activities which helped us improve different aspects in tennis, including catching skills, hand-eye coordination, balance, synchronization and learning to control the ball when using a racquet.

We did many relays with tennis balls and water balloons, going over different obstacles and throwing them from different distances. When we did it with the water balloons we had to be careful so they didn’t pop: all of the teams' balloons had burst by the end of it! We also did lots of activities in pairs and kept a scorecard of our results. All these activities were improving the different aspects that we need for tennis! We then did a competition when you had to balance your tennis racquet on the tip of your fingers for as long as you could which helps with hand-eye coordination and balance. At the end, many of us got Judy Murray’s autograph on our t-shirts and some had a photo with her. Overall it was an amazing experience for all of us and we all had an amazing time!
