Sheffield Labour Left  - For Socialism

A bulletin for Labour Party Members who supported the direction the party moved towards under Jeremy Corbyn & John McDonnell.
Opposing racism, antisemitism and political Zionism.
Opposing all expulsions/exclusions targeting the left.

SLL E-Bulletin #62 - 8 September 2021

Open Meeting:

- Wednesday 15th September

- 7.30pm to 9.30pm

"What future for the Labour Party?"

The Labour Party has reached a crossroads. The turning to the right – currently steered by Starmer and Evans – risk taking it into electoral obscurity and condemn the labour movement to be unrepresented on the political stage for the foreseeable future.

A turn to the left – first championed under Corbyn’s leadership – can provide the transformative, socialist-led government that society so desperately needs.

For anyone on the left, the Party is becoming an empty shell promoting Blair 2.0 at a time when pursuing a middle of the road course risks a crash into oblivion.

With the Party Conference imminent, Sheffield Labour Left is hosting an opportunity for socialists to consider the routes ahead.

Graham Bash, a leading figure on the Labour left for decades, currently under attack from the auto expulsion hit squad, will be speaking at the meeting providing a context for a debate on where to next for socialists in the Labour Party.

There will be plenty of time for questions and contributions as to what this all means for the determined Left and the Labour Party itself.

Speaker: Graham Bash - Labour Party member for 52 years, Political Officer JVL, Political Secretary LRC, Labour Briefing editorial Board member.

Sheffield Labour Left

Sheffield Labour Left (SLL) is a network to help co-ordinate the genuine Labour Party left across the six CLPs covered by Sheffield.

We have a page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SheffieldLabourLeft) and our own website (http://www.sheffieldlabourleft.org), where you can find an archive of our first 60 bulletins.

We are connected to no other group, but work alongside others whose aims we share to see elected a socialist-led government.

Apartheid in Israel

'On 12 January 2021 the Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem, published its momentous Report “A regime of Jewish supremacy from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea: This is apartheid”. It stated that Israel’s regime of apartheid and occupation is inextricably bound up in human rights violations. It explained in detail why Israel’s regime is correctly described in international law as apartheid. On 27 April 2021 Human Rights watch followed with its Report entitled “A Threshold Crossed:  Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution”.' - Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers, May 22, 2021.

Whilst it is obvious to any reasonable person that these reports do not in any way hold those of Jewish ethnicity, or followers of Judaism, as collectively responsible for the crimes of the Israeli state, in the same way that criticism of apartheid in South Africa did not hold all whites responsible, there are those on the right of the Labour Party alongside anti-Palestinian campaigners that do try and make the claim that calling Israel an apartheid state is somehow anti-Semitic.

As socialists and internationalists we must call things as they are.  We have a duty to show solidarity with the oppressed.  In the instance of Israel it is becoming clearer for all who care to look, that not only are the Palestinians an oppressed people in the state of Israel and the occupied territories, but that there is a form of apartheid being imposed by the Israeli state.
