Sheffield Labour Left

A bulletin for Sheffield Labour Party Members who support the direction the party is moving under Jeremy Corbyn & John McDonnell.
For Socialism. Opposing racism, antisemitism and Zionism.
Opposing all expulsions/exclusions targeting the left.
Bulletin No 14, March 5 2019

Stop the witchhunt – Defend Chris Williamson!

We are at a crunch time for Corybn and the left project. It appears that Corbyn wishes to support Chris Williamson, but Lansman (and John McDonnell?) are prepared to throw him under the bus in order to try and appease the right of the PLP.

Why would anyone on the left wish to do this? Well, indications are that they so fear further defections on the right and regard a centre-party as a threat to the chances of a Labour government being elected, that they will do anything (including sacrificing those on the left) to stop such a split.

The stupidity of such an approach has seemingly passed them by. Tom Watson and others will not be placated. Not until they have the head of Corbyn.

And as for Momentum... Sheffield Momentum, which organised the meeting that got Chris Williamson suspended, have so far refused to issue any kind of statement in his defence.  So, you invite someone to speak at your meeting, you film it, you applaud his comments and then when he is attacked for the very same comments you applauded, you say nothing in his defence!

To make matters worse, Sheffield Momentum postponed their all-members meeting scheduled for 6 March, so the Steering Committee could “consider matters”! Seriously?  Since when did issuing support for the left facing a witch-hunt require such a delay?

At least one member of Momentum Sheffield had submitted a motion in support of Chris to the scheduled meeting. The decision of the Steering Committee to postpone the meeting meant that members would not get an opportunity to discuss the issues until the committee felt it more appropriate. Lucky that the Steering Committee is looking after their best interests, who know what those pesky members might vote for!

In complete contrast, Sheffield Labour Left issued a statement in support of Chris on the morning after he was suspended:

“Sheffield Labour Left stands in full solidarity with Chris Williamson MP. Any allegations that Chris is enabling or minimising anti-Semitism are not only unfounded, but part of a hostile and anti-democratic campaign. As Jeremy Corbyn recently said: “Chris Williamson is a very good, very effective Labour MP. He’s a very strong anti-racist campaigner. He is not anti-Semitic.

Of course, allegations of anti-Semitism should be dealt with, but this should follow due process. Any false and trumped up allegations to score political points against Corbyn and his supporters, however, must also come to an end.
Solidarity with Chris! For Socialism!”

And the next day, at a Sheffield Labour Left public meeting, there was a unanimous vote in support of Chris.

We are also urging our supporters to sign petitions/open-letters in support of Chris, including the following ones:
- Reinstate Chris Williamson!
 -
Don't Expel Chris Williamson MP from the Labour Party

There is a useful list of resolutions, statements and quotes in support of Chris Williamson MP on Labour Against the Witchhunt’s website here. Please consider moving similar motions in your branch/CLPs. As you can see, Sheffield Hallam CLP and Park and Arbourthorne branch (Heeley CLP) were amongst the first to pass successful resolutions.

Attendees of a public meeting on 'Clause 4' express their full solidarity with Chris Williamson MP.

On behalf of Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL), Labour Against the Witchhunt (LAW) and Sheffield Labour Left we should like to invite you to a local showing of a documentary about Jackie Walker called 'WitchHunt' by activist filmmaker Jon Pullman.

This film is a gripping documentary by Pullman who has combined extensive archive material with authoritative new interviews to explore the connections between the attacks on Labour, the unfolding tragedy of Palestine, and the wider struggle against race-based oppression. He also examines the use of antisemitism allegations to silence critics of Israel’s human rights violations and, in doing so, exposes the dishonest campaign to discredit Jeremy Corbyn and the Left.

Mike Leigh: “This impeccably-executed film exposes with chilling accuracy the terrifying threat that now confronts democracy, and the depressing intractability of the Israel-Palestine situation.” More info about the film is available here

Please get in touch if you need transport from Sheffield - we can arrange a car pool.

Initially set up as Sheffield Labour Left List (SLLL) as a network to help co-ordinate the left across the six CLPs covered by Sheffield. After a productive first 12 months and 10 bulletins, and after attending a regional event organised by Durham Labour Left, we changed to Sheffield Labour Left, electing a temporary Steering Committee, in December 2018.

We have a page on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SheffieldLabourLeft) and our own website (http://www.sheffieldlabourleft.org), where you can find an archive of our previous bulletins. We are working on populating the website some more, feel free to send us material.

We are connected to no other group, but work alongside others whose aims we share to see elected a socialist-led government.
