Sheffield Labour Left  - For Socialism

A bulletin for Labour Party Members who supported the direction the party moved towards under Jeremy Corbyn & John McDonnell.
Opposing racism, antisemitism and political Zionism.
Opposing all expulsions/exclusions targeting the left.

SLL E-Bulletin #58 - 21 July 2021

The purging of the left:

Mark the date – 20th July 2021. It is the day that democracy, socialism and electability were removed from the Labour Party for the foreseeable future.
Extreme statement you say? But we are all extremists now unless we agree with the CEO of Labour plc – K Starmer – and worship at the feet of this policy lite, Tory lite saviour.
Democracy is dead for now in the Party because we have the unedifying sight of the NEC ratifying Evans’ move to expel anyone who belongs to an organisation with socialists in it.
Socialist Appeal, one of the four organisations proscribed, contains many willing Labour workers who have been at the forefront of campaigning for Labour over the last five years.
Not enough! You can vote Lib Dem (A Campbell) and have Starmer calling for Campbell’s reinstatement in 2020 saying he would “want anybody who wants to be in our party in our party”. Or make racist remarks about Muslims (T Phillips) and be a party member, but you cannot vote Labour, work for a Labour victory but disagree with the saviour.
Right wing attack dog MP Neil Coyle wanted to go further and proscribe Jewish Voice for Labour.
Socialism has been shown the door as we now know that those 10 pledges during Starmer’s  leadership campaign have the same currency as B Johnson’s every utterance. He cannot even bring himself to support workers in dispute with their employers and failed to back the deserving pay rise sought by the health unions.
And electability. It is supremely ironic that at the same NEC meeting cuts of 25 per cent to the party’s workforce were agreed. Why is the party nearly bankrupt financially? Evans admitted that the loss of so many members and hefty legal bills to settle antisemitism cases out of court were to blame.
To win an election the Labour Party requires inspiring policies addressing the everyday concerns of voters with a strategy for the future. And, of course, money to fight a campaign.
Starmer has shown he fails on all counts and staff cuts will only further damage a party now relying on a rump of right-wing volunteers to drum up support.
The left is close to a tipping point. The immediate priority must be to stay and show solidarity with those comrades facing expulsion. September’s conference may be the point where Starmer does a Kinnock – but look where that ended up.

Please put this motion to your Branch/CLP:

'Motion on Socialist Appeal

This CLP condemns the decision of Labour’s National Executive Committee that Socialist Appeal, Labour Against the Witch-hunt, and the Labour in Exile Network be proscribed political organisations. This initiative marks the beginning of the latest phase of the right wing’s witch hunt of the left in the Labour Party.

The relevant rule being used is for excluding people who support political organisations which stand candidates against the Labour Party in elections. Yet supporters of Socialist Appeal have always campaigned in support of the Labour Party, in both local and general elections.

This CLP believes that it is the work that supporters of Socialist Appeal have done to promote socialist ideas within the Party and their expression of no confidence in the current leadership, that is the real reason for the proscription, and it asks why right-wing organisations, such as Progressive Britain and Labour First, have not been proscribed, given the damage their supporters did to Corbyn’s leadership and to the Party’s chances of success in the General Elections of 2017 and 2019.

This CLP opposes any expulsion of supporters of Socialist Appeal from the Labour Party and stands in solidarity with them and with the hundreds of other Party members who have been unjustly suspended and expelled in previous phases of the witch hunt against the left.

The leadership of the Party must change course.  We want the Labour Party to become a mass socialist party that will fight for the interests of the working class.

This CLP agrees to submit this motion to the Local Campaign Forum.'

Sheffield Labour Left

Sheffield Labour Left (SLL) is a network to help co-ordinate the genuine Labour Party left across the six CLPs covered by Sheffield.
We have a page on Facebook ( and our own website (, where you can find an archive of our first 55 bulletins.
We are connected to no other group, but work alongside others whose aims we share to see elected a socialist-led government.  In July 2019 we affiliated to the Labour Left Alliance.
