OLD GRIFFINIAN NEWSLETTER

Spring Term Edition - February 2017

Dear <<First Name>>

Welcome to the 2017 Spring Term Edition of the Old Griffinian Newsletter.

Food, Glorious Food!

The theme for this half term at Beech Hall has definitely been food! It seems to have inflitrated every part of the curriculum and also extra curricular activities.  May be it's the time of year?

With different smells emulating from the new Food Technology Room and tantalising the taste buds, it is difficult not to feel hungry whilst in the vicinity and it is lovely to see all the pupils being put through their culinary paces in this new facility.  A far cry from School Boy memories of “Prep School Cabbage”!  Food has also been found in a cross curricular French/Food Technology lessons with  Juniors participating in L'Épiphanie celebrations and making Croque Monsieurs, and with Pre-Prep experiencing Le Gouter by making Hot Chocolate and tasting baguettes with Jam, pain au chocolate and French chocolate biscuits - yum!

Junior pupils have also been incorporating food into their art lessons drawing a cross-section of a pepper taking into account proportions, colour and shape.

The School has also been gripped by the Bake Off Bug and Senior and Junior pupils have paired up to bake different items each week in an after-school activity, in order to contest the grand title of Beech Hall Master Baker(s) which will be announced after the Grand Final on 5 April 2017.

The Beech Hall Parents’ Association have also been busy putting together a gastronomic extravaganza at their Annual Burns’ Night on Saturday 28 January, with 5 courses cooked by an Infant parent and wine and beer pairing to complement each course.  Definitely one for the diary next year.

We are also delighted to welcome pupils from Park Lane Special School, Macclesfield to Beech Hall on a Monday afternoon each week, allowing them to practise their culinary skills and develop valuable life skills in food preparation.  Another example, of the collaboration we have with this local school.

Can you remember School dinners at Beech Hall?

If so, we would love to hear from you about your likes and dislikes on the menu in your time at the School and any funny stories.  Please email Tandy Palmes on alumni@beechhallschool.org.

Sport

The School has now added Volleyball to its Sporting Curriculum as the Senior Pupils have formed an elite squad in training for a Charity Invitational Event on 29 March 2017, at the sister school, Riverston in London.  We look forward to providing an update on this in our next newsletter.

Our Senior boys continue to develop their Fives skills under the guidance of Headmaster, Mr Allen, and also the School has made significant progress in the development of a competitive senior rugby team, thanks to a very dedicated parent/coach and the support of the BHPA who have just purchased a Scrummage machine to assist with their intensive training.  We have also been dominant on the football pitch, with a significant 2-0 win over arch rivals, Westbourne, by our U15 team.

Our Junior teams continue to participate and enjoy sport and the following sums up the ethos and camaraderie of sport at Beech Hall from a recent edition of the Griffin newsletter:

Glaramara Parent & Child Weekend

On a cold weekend in January, a group of parents, children and staff headed up the M6 to Glaramara, which some of you will remember fondly (or maybe not so fondly!) either for your Summer Camps or the Parent & Child Weekends.  Luckily, this time, we were blessed with the weather, a far cry from the last time, when we found ourselves surrounded by water on the Sunday morning.  You can find out more about what everyone got up to in the latest edition of the Griffin Extra.

Full Fledged Alumni

The first meeting of the Beech Hall School Alumni was held on Thursday 9 February, and it was lovely to see some old friends of the School in the form of both pupils and teachers. If you would like to get involved in helping organising Alumni events, networking with former pupils, staff and parents of the School and raising funds through the Alumni, please email Tandy Palmes.

The next Committee meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday 4 May 2017 at Beech Hall School.  We hope to see you there.
