THE LION'S

ROAR

December 2022

DV'S DESK

Dear Ones,

I write this just before Thanksgiving.  We are about to enter the season of Advent.  Advent comes from the Latin and means “to come.”  During Advent we wait and watch for the coming of the Christ Child, God with us.  This is not a passive process.  Jesus reminds us that you and I are to be constantly awake and ready for when he comes again.

Here are some suggestions for how you and I might use Advent to prepare our hearts and minds this year:

*Watch “A Charlie Brown’s Christmas.”  I especially love the part when Linus shares the story of Christmas with Charlie Brown and his friends.

*Read “A Christmas Carol,” perhaps aloud with your household.  There are also several movie versions Dickens’ classic tale.

*Listen to your favorite music.  The Christmas portion Handel’s Messiah is a must for me at this time of year.

*St. Mark’s is collecting new or gently used toys.  Bring your offering to church and brighten Christmas for a local child.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list.  These suggestions are to get your thoughts going.

Faithfully Yours,
Dawn-Victoria+

All are welcome to join us as we get our hearts
and minds ready for Christmas. We’ll get a jump
start by beginning on Wednesday, 9 November at
7pm. The Advent study is by Zoom only due to
the early darkness and chancy weather we can
have here.
We are using Adam Hamilton’s The Journey
series. Hamilton is the Senior Pastor of The
United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in
Leawood, Kansas. The Journey includes short
videos filmed in the Holy Land and discussion.

Please let Dawn-Victoria know if you’d like to participate so she can send you the Zoom link. The link will also be published in the bulletin and on Realm. There is a companion book available for those who may want to dig deeper, however it is not necessary for participation.

Ladies Brunch Bunch
Tuesday December 13, at 8:30am
Join us at St. Mark's undercroft for quiche, fruit, and some holiday treats!  Please RSVP to Kathy or Dawn.

Sponsor a Poinsettia and Help Altar Guild

You can sponsor a poinsettia!  St. Mark's Altar Guild is sponsoring poinsettias for our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services.  If you would like to purchase a poinsettia through the Altar Guild as an expression of celebration or memorial, please sign up on the bulletin board at church or contact Sue Phelps.
The costs are as follows:
 6 inch pot = $7
 8 inch pot = $15
10 inch pot = $20

We would like you to take your ordered plant home after Christmas.  Purchased plants will be used to decorate our altar and sanctuary!

NOTE:  Payment is due by December 15th to the Altar Guild at St. Mark's.

Prices for flowers has gone up (along with everything else).  If you can't sponsor a plant please consider donating to the Altar Guild to help them with expenses.  You can submit a form to dedicate flowers to loved ones past and present.  Forms are located on the bulletin board.

St. Mark’s is collecting toys for Project Concern’s Christmas Toy Giveaway.  You can donate by placing new or gently used toys in the gray bin in the foyer or you can donate directly to Project Concern.  Last day to accept toys is 12/15

The Annual Meeting is Sunday, 22 January 2023 after the 10am service.
Coffee Hour is back!!  Please be sure to sign up to host.  Just bring some sweets or other treats and leave them on the table in the undercroft.  Coffee, hot water, and bottled water are always available.  Easy Peasy!!
Dawn-Victoria is now blogging!!  You can catch her blog at revdvmdesk.blogspot.com.  A new blog comes out about every other week.  She covers a wide range of subjects including Episcopal trivia, liturgical matters, and general musings about church life.  Sign up and follow her today!  Feel free to suggest a topic for her to cover.

We are still looking for people to record Sunday Services.  We stream to FB and YouTube and need people to fill in on Sunday morning.  We will train you on using the cameras and iPad to record.  It's as easy as turning on the cameras and hitting the record button.
