THE LION'S

ROAR

April 2023

Dear Ones,

I am very excited to announce an addition to St. Mark’s. The
Reverend Deacon David Stickley has been appointed to St. Mark’s
by Bishop DeDe. David is appointed for a one-year trial period
starting 1 April. Please see David’s biography below to learn more about him. Deacon Dorothy Pierce will continue her ministry with All Saints’ in Johnson City.

Deacons are a specific order of ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church. As noted above, Deacons serve under the direction of a Bishop and are appointed by a Bishop. Deacons are ordained to a special ministry of Word and Service. Deacons proclaim the Gospel, set the Table, and dismiss us in the Sunday liturgy. They typically also preach, teach, and offer pastoral care along with the priest of a parish. Deacons are a bridge between the church and the world. A Deacon is to interpret the church to the world and to interpret the needs of the world to the church as well as to assist the church in responding to those needs. This is why a Deacon is almost never employed by a congregation but generally has some vocation out in the world during the week or has retired from a career.

The specifics of what David’s ministry with us at St. Mark’s will look like is still being worked out.  This includes potential office hours and how David might best use his gifts for ministry with St. Mark’s. I look forward to having Deacon David with us at St. Mark’s. Please join me in giving him
a warm welcome.

Faithfully,
Dawn-Victoria+
Priest-in-Charge

Reverend Deacon David Stickley

Ordained a deacon in June 2009, David Stickley moved to New York after having been in the diocese of California nearly 25 years. David graduated from School from Deacons with a degree in Diaconal Studies and from Ithaca College with a degree in business management. He has worked extensively in Office Administration and Management, and in Retail and Retail Management. David currently works as the administrative person for the Department of Faith Formation in the national Episcopal Church offices. He has participated extensively in the Bay Area in programs serving unhoused people, from feeding and housing to pastoral care on the streets. He is currently beginning jail ministry with the Broome County Council of Churches. You may notice a thread of serving those who are marginalized and oppressed – this is always close to the deacon’s heart as one who helps the Church fulfil its mission in the world (ref Acts 6:1-6).

Partnership Steering Committee

The Steering Committee met on March 10th at All Saints in Johnson City. Carl Wright and Sue Phelps represent St. Mark's. Judy Horton and Debbie Thorpe represent All Saints. Various topics were discussed including ways to support Rev. Dawn, ways to create a bridge between the parishioners of All Saints and St. Mark's and the specific outreach programs each church participates in.

All Saint's has an open CHOW pantry 4 days a week and offers a soup and Sandwich lunch 1 day a week that they began 16 yrs. ago. They have seen increased need and anticipate more in the months ahead due to the decline in government funded programs. We discussed the outreach programs of St. Mark's as well.

In order to encourage socialization between the parishes, a soup and bread supper is planned at St. Mark's on Maundy Thursday, April 6th at 5:45 in the Undercroft to precede the 7 p.m. combined service. All Saint's will host a cookie and punch reception following the Easter Vigil planned for April 8th at 7 at All Saints.

The Committee plans to meet again on April 14th.

 Respectfully submitted,
 Sue Phelps
