Dear Families,

I was hoping to be writing about spring fever, but as I look out the window today, spring is nowhere to be seen.  Even though Vermont winters tend to go on and on, I know better weather is around the corner and will eventually be here.  Our Lenten journey here at school has been a good one so far and, just like the spring weather, Easter will be here before we know it.

At this time of year, I like to take a moment to remind families about the importance of a good school, family, life balance.  As we head toward spring sports and the last trimester, we sometimes see students struggling to meet their academic responsibilities.  Often they are out later for their sports practices and games,  which cuts down on family time.  As a sports fanatic myself, I encourage children to get outside and be active, but we must also help students remember the importance of academic responsibilities. Here at school, we try to ensure that homework directly relates to the work we are doing and is only given when it benefits the learning of the students.  Homework is an important part of the academic process and contributes to a student’s classroom success.  Family, school, recreation --balance is the key and helping students establish a consistent routine can go a long way towards creating that.  Please know how much we appreciate the partnership we have with our families. We always want to work with you to provide the healthiest balance possible for your children.

Second trimester report cards go home today.  Please be on the lookout for them.  You can keep the report card itself, but please return the envelope, signed by a parent or guardian on the outside, to school.  This is our way of confirming that you have seen the report card.  We are excited to start a new trimester with our students and to help them reach their academic goals.

There has been a great deal of interest in Saint Francis Xavier School over the past months, with many prospective families contacting us for tours and shadow dates for their children.  I know that is in large part due to so many of you sharing your experience here at Saint Francis with family and friends. There is no greater compliment to our school community than having you recommend it to others!

A few of our current families have not yet re-registered. Having a firm sense of our enrollment is key to our planning for next year, so please let me know if you need any assistance with the registration process. A few of our classes are nearing their enrollment limit and we want to preserve space for all our current families.

I will leave you with a quote that is particularly applicable during Lent, but I also refer to it often when working with students.

“Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring."
– St. Catherine of Siena

God Bless,

Eric Becker

SPORTS NEWS:

Congratulations to all our CYO basketball players who competed in the Vermont State Tournament over the past two weekends. Our 6th grade boys and 8th grade boys will be heading to the Regional Tournament to represent Vermont. Great work by players and coaches!

6th Grade Boys
As our season comes to an end our boys had a great season!!!  This past weekend we had the semi final and state final games.  We played Marti Christi in the semi finals, and boy was it a nail bitter.  Our boys played hard and stayed in the game, we took the win with a final score of 27-25.  The boys wanted that win bad so they could play in the final game, they hustled, were aggressive (in a good way) and played well as a team.  Seth Richards had 10 points; Carter Blanchard had 8 points; Evan Havereluk had 5 points and Seneca Duroscher had 4 points.  It was defiantly a team effort to get us into the finals.

On Sunday we played St. Mark's in the state final.  It was a tough game and we knew it would be.  Our boys came out strong and played hard.  Unfortunately when the other team hits 4, 3 points in a row it is hard to come back.  We did not take the title of state champs home but we played hard.  The final score of the game was 51-30.  Ayden Johnson had 11 points; Seth Richards, Kellen Bourgeois and Jaidyn LaFond all had 4 points; Seneca Duroscher had 3 points and Joe Canney and Carter Blanchard both had 2 points.

We aren't quite done yet, we are on our way to Bridgeport CT the 31st of March for regionals.  Send us good vibes and wish the boys luck!!  Go SFX!!!

8th Grade Boys
3/18/17:
In the semi-final round of the 2017 CYO Vermont Boys Tournament Grade 7/8 division, #2 seed SFX took on #3 seed St. John Vianney.  The first half was fast-paced with solid inside passing and numerous lead changes.  The game was tight at 23-24 at half.  The second half was very physical with SFX turning up the pressure, surging late in the game and pulling away.  The final was 56-41, moving SFX to the finals against #1 seed Mater Christi A team.  Scoring was led by Deon Mitchell with 18 and Saladi Mayange with 17; Max Gordon had 12, JJ Stockbridge added 7 and Zac Roy, 2.

3/19/17:
As the old saying goes, it’s difficult to beat the same team three times in one season.  This thankfully held true for the SFX Golden Angels.  After losing their two regular season games vs. Mater Christi A team (#1 seed), SFX won when it really counted, besting their cross-town rivals, 45-37 and wining the Northern VT CYO tournament.  SFX now moves on to Bridgeport, CT for the regional Tournament on April 2.  Play was very fast and aggressive with both teams clearly showing their desire to win the title.  The aggressive play led to numerous foul shots in the first half, but scoring was low, with the game knotted at 16 at half.  The third quarter too was back and forth, ending with a one point Mater Christi lead at 30-29.  Carson Corrigan netted a key three pointer in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and SFX ran down the clock.  It was a very exciting game.  For SFX, Carson led the scoring with 17, JJ Stockbridge with 13, Deon Mitchell had 7, and Saladi Mayange and Chris Prim each chipped in 2.  Congrats to the 7/8 boys with the championship and wishing them all the best in Tournament play!
